    • A FPD includes a signal processing circuit and noise detecting elements provided for each group containing plural columns of pixels. The signal processing circuit converts signal charges accumulated in the pixels into electric signals and outputs the electric signals. Each of the noise detecting elements has the same structure as that of the pixel, but does not have a function of accumulating the electric charges. A voltage signal of the noise detecting element represents noise components. A subtractor subtracts the voltage signal of the noise detecting elements from a voltage signal of the pixels which is outputted from the noise processing circuit.

    • In a radiography system, after a radiation dose, signal charges are accumulated in sensor pixels in an imaging area of a flat panel detector corresponding to the dosed amounts of radioactive rays on the pixels. The signal charges are read out from the pixels and converted into voltage signals representative of density levels of respective pixels of a radiographic image. Before reading the signal charges, a dose profile representative of distribution of the dosed amounts of radioactive rays is measured by leak currents from the pixels or bias currents through bias lines for applying a bias voltage to the pixels. Based on the contrast or difference between the maximum value and the minimum value in the dose profile, a gain of amplifiers for the voltage signals is determined such that the gain increases with decreasing contrast.

    • An FPD is provided with an ammeter for measuring current on a wired connection of a bias line that applies a bias voltage to pixels. A control circuit compares the measured value of the ammeter and a threshold value. When the measured value of the ammeter is equal to or larger than the threshold value, the control circuit judges that an emission of X-rays from an X-ray source is started. Until before the start of the X-ray irradiation is detected, the control circuit stops supplying electric power to a signal processing circuit, and turns on all TFTs. Once the start of the X-ray irradiation is detected, the control circuit turns off all the TFTs, and makes the FPD shift to a charge accumulation operation. Thereafter, the control circuit turns on a processing power source to start supplying the electric power to the signal processing circuit.
