    • A semiconductor light source lighting circuit is provided with: a switching regulator that generates a drive current of a semiconductor light source using a switching element; and a control circuit that controls ON/OFF of the switching element. The control circuit is provided with: a comparator that compares the drive current and a target value; a counter that counts a digital value in a count direction determined by a comparison result of the comparator; a digital-analog converter that converts the digital value into an analog signal; and a drive circuit that controls the ON/OFF of the switching element based on the analog signal. The counter counts the digital value at a speed determined by an ON/OFF cycle of the switching element.

    • A discharge lamp lighting circuit includes a DC/DC converter which generates from an input voltage a drive voltage to be applied to a discharge lamp of a driven object. A first drive voltage generating path has one end to which the input voltage is applied, and at the other end of which is an output capacitor on an output side of the DC/DC converter. A second drive voltage generating path has one end to which the input voltage is applied, and at the other end of which is the output capacitor. The second drive voltage generating path is different from the first drive voltage generating path. A control circuit controls ON/OFF of the first drive voltage generating path. The discharge lamp lighting circuit is arranged so that the voltage of the output capacitor when the first drive voltage generating path is in an ON-state becomes higher than the voltage of the output capacitor when the first drive voltage generating path is not so.

    • In a process in which a control signal having a low level is output from an ON/OFF control circuit to series regulators connected to LEDs serving as lighting targets to turn ON the LEDs in accordance with digital communication information, the ON/OFF control circuit calculates a specified current value to be supplied to the LEDs serving as the lighting targets and compares the specified current value with a detected current value which is detected by a current detecting circuit, and outputs a stop signal to a control circuit on the assumption that a current flows without the series regulators with grounding generated on a cathode side of any of LEDs when the detected current value is greater than the specified current value. When the control circuit turns OFF an NMOS transistor in response to the stop signal, an operation of a switching regulator is stopped.
