    • A subject discriminating apparatus discriminates a subject having an unevenness pattern on a surface of the subject. The subject discriminating apparatus includes: a transparent unit including a supporting surface supporting the subject; a light irradiation unit irradiating illumination light onto the surface of the subject through the transparent unit; an imaging unit imaging an imaging region including at least a part of the transparent unit, and generating image data; and a discrimination processing unit discriminating the subject, using the image data generated by the imaging unit. The discrimination processing unit discriminates the subject based on discrimination image data generated by correcting subject image data using correction image data. The subject image data is generated by imaging the imaging region in a state of the subject presenting in the imaging region. The correction image data is generated by imaging the imaging region free from the subject in the imaging region.

    • An imaging unit images a subject having an unevenness pattern on a surface. The imaging unit includes: a surface light source that emits with a constant output illumination light illuminating the surface of the subject; an imager that receives reflected light reflected by the surface of the subject; and a beam splitter that is arranged at a location at which the illumination light emitted from the surface light source and the reflected light incident on the imager intersect with each other. The illumination light emitted from the surface light source is incident on the surface of the subject via the beam splitter. The reflected light reflected by the surface of the subject is incident on the imager via the beam splitter. The illumination light incident on the surface of the subject includes parallel light that is perpendicularly incident on the surface of the subject, and diffused light.

    • A coin discriminating apparatus includes a light source for emitting light toward one surface of a coin being transported, a reflected light sensor for receiving light emitted from the light source and reflected by the coin, light emitting elements disposed downstream of the light source for emitting light toward the one surface of the coin being transported, a sensor for photoelectrically receiving light emitted from the light emitting elements and reflected by the one surface of the coin and producing image pattern data of the one surface of the coin, a memory for storing reference data of coins of each denomination, a first denomination discriminator for calculating coin diameter based on the image pattern data of the one surface of the coin produced by the sensor, comparing it with reference diameter data of coins of each denomination stored in the memory and tentatively determining the denomination of the coin, a second denomination discriminator for reading reference pattern data of coins of the denomination determined by the first denomination discriminator from the memory, comparing the reference pattern data with the image pattern data of the one surface of the coin and finally determining the denomination of the coin, and a received light amount controller for controlling an amount of light reflected by the one surface of the coin to be detected by the sensor in accordance with an amount of light reflected by the coin and detected by the reflected light sensor. According to the thus constituted coin discriminating apparatus, it is possible to discriminate whether or not coins are acceptable and the denominations of coins with high accuracy by optically detecting the surface patterns of coins.

    • A coin discriminating method includes steps of irradiating a surface of a coin with light, photoelectrically detecting light reflected by the surface of the coin, producing detected pattern data of the surface of the coin, binarizing corresponding reference pattern data so that “1” is assigned to pixel data having a signal intensity level equal to or higher than a predetermined signal intensity level and “0” is assigned to pixel data having a signal intensity level lower than the predetermined signal intensity level to produce reference bright portion pattern data consisting of “1” pixel data and reference dark portion pattern data consisting of “0” pixel data, extracting bright portion pattern data consisting of pixels corresponding to pixels included in the reference bright portion pattern data and dark portion pattern data consisting of pixels corresponding to pixels included in the reference dark portion pattern data from the detected pattern data, and discriminating whether or not the surface of the coin is damaged to higher than the predetermined level by comparing the difference between the bright portion data signal intensity average value and dark portion data signal intensity average value with a threshold value of coins of a corresponding denomination.

    • A coin discriminating apparatus includes a plurality of light emitting elements for projecting light onto a coin, a light receiver for optically detecting light reflected by the coin, and a scattering member, disposed on an opposite side of the coin from a light receiver, for scattering light emitted from the plurality of light emitting elements. The light receiver receives light reflected by the coin and light scattered by the scattering member and produces pattern data. The coin discriminating apparatus further includes a coin discriminator for detecting a diameter of the coin based on the pattern data produced by the light receiver, tentatively determining a denomination of the coin, and comparing the pattern data of the coin produced by the light receiver with reference pattern data of a coin of the tentatively determined denomination. It is therefore possible to discriminate coins with high accuracy by optically detecting the pattern of obverse or reverse surfaces of the coins, even if dust and the like adhere to the side surfaces of the coins.
