    • Herein disclosed is a vehicular safety device which is adapted to protect a vehicle occupant or a pedestrian from injury in the event of a collision of a motor vehicle. The safety device has an inflatable protective bag which is arranged to be rapidly expanded to a protective position when the motor vehicle encounters the collision. The inflatable bag is expanded by a pressurized gas which is supplied from an appropriate pressurized gas reservoir through a mechanism which is responsive to the collision and which has rupturable sealing means including an explosive means activated at the moment the collision takes place.

    • A safety device for a motor vehicle adapted to protect a vehicle occupant from injury in the event of a collision of the motor vehicle, comprising pressurized gas supply unit including a pressurized gas generating means and a sealing means in clsoing engagement with a discharge outlet portion of the pressurized gas generating means. The sealing means includes a unitary casing having a closed end portion and an open end portion and detonating means mounted at the closed end portion of the casing for rupturing, when activated, the casing thereby to provide communication between the outlet portion and the inflatable confinement whereby the pressurized gas is admitted to the inflatable confinement to actuate the same to its protective position.

    • A safety device for protecting a vehicle occupant from injury during a collision of a motor vehicle which safety device comprises, an inflatable confinement which is normally held in a contracted position, a source of a pressurized fluid capable of communicating with the inflatable confinement to supply the pressurized fluid to the inflatable confinement for thereby inflating the same when the motor vehicle is encountered the collision, a diffusing member operatively disposed in the inflatable confinement and having a plurality of apertures opening in a direction to inflate the inflatable confinement for directing the flow of the pressurized fluid to the inflatable confinement, the diffusing member communicating with the source of pressurized fluid, a mounting base member for supporting the inflatable confinement, and means for defining an exhaust passage opening to the atmosphere. The exhaust passage communicates with the inflatable confinement, whereby when the pressurized fluid is admitted to the inflatable confinement through the plurality of apertures of the diffusing member, the pressurized fluid initially inflates the inflatable confinement and subsequently discharges from the exhaust passage to absorb the impacting force of the vehicle occupant against the confinement.

The sealing means includes a first split cap member releasably attached to the discharge spout to hermetically seal off the same engaging the discharge spout, a second cap member associated with the first cap member for hermetically seal off the discharge spout, and explosive means for releasing, when activated, the first and second cap members from the discharge spout thereby to provide communication between the discharge spout and the inflatable confinement whereby the pressurized gas is admitted into the inflatable confinement to actuate the same to its protective position.

    • An improved vehicular safety device is disclosed which is adapted to protect a vehicle occupant or a pedestrian from injury in the event of a collision of a motor vehicle. The safety device includes an inflatable confinement or a protector bag which is arranged to be rapidly expanded to a protective position immediately when the collision is encountered by the motor vehicle. The protector bag is expanded with a pressurized gas which is supplied from a pressurized gas generator which is closed by a rupturable sealing member. The sealing member is torn apart to open the gas generator by means of a mechanism including an explosive means activated when the collision condition is responded to by the safety device and a piston which is projected against the sealing means when the explosive means is activated.
