    • The pupil locations of a user with respect to a computing device can be determined by capturing one or more images of the user and analyzing those images using a set of pupil detection algorithms. Each algorithm can produce at least one estimated position with an associated confidence value, and this information from each algorithm can be used to determine a probable location of each pupil. In some embodiments, one or more environmental factors can be used to adjust the confidence values or select algorithms based on how the corresponding algorithms perform under those conditions. Similarly, an independence of the various algorithms can be utilized in some embodiments to adjust the confidence levels or weight results based on a level of dependence between those algorithms.

    • A system and method are provided, for use with a computer graphical user interface (GUI) system, for giving the user help information associated with displayed symbols, such as icons representing data objects, applications, etc. For a given icon or other symbol, a plurality of different images are provided. When help is invoked, such as in response to a user moving the display cursor onto the icon, the plurality of help images are displayed. The images may represent a sequence of actions the user is to take, in order to make use of the object represented by the icon. The images are then displayed in time sequence. The images may then include reminder images of what had taken place prior to the image currently being displayed. Alternatively, the images may represent a set of alternative uses to which the user may put the object. In this case, the images may also be displayed one at a time, for a given duration each, or may be displayed simultaneously, around the perimeter of the icon or otherwise near the icon, to allow the user to observe and choose from among the alternatives.

    • A notebook computer having a resilient, portfolio-type case includes a large flat-panel display module and a processor-keyboard module constructed into the case so that the case need not be stored separately during use. The case is secured for carrying by a slide fastener, and the angle between the display and the keyboard is adjustable by positioning of the slider in the open position. Crushable corners, an extending, protective lip, and a resilient, rugged material provide added protection for the computer while in use and while being transported. The two functional modules are electrically interconnected via inexpensive flex cable routed along the fold between opposed halves. The computer includes a removable, multipurpose writing pad that folds into the case serving as a protective cover for the keyboard in the open position, and is detachable and insertable between the flat display panel and the keyboard during transport. When opened, the writing pad is attachable by snap button to opposite ends of the computer for both left-handed and right-handed users. The writing pad provides a large, flat surface suitable for writing and for operation of an external computer pointing device such as a mouse. The detachable writing pad folds across the keyboard in the open position when the computer is not in use, and alternatively attaches to the bottom of the protective cover for carrying, or is detached and stowed between the keyboard and the flat panel display for storage.

    • An information processing system includes at least two processors sharing a common instruction set and address space. One processor at a time is active and executes program instructions. The active processor is placed into a sleep mode in which a current machine state is saved in the shared address space and instruction execution is suspended. A different processor becomes active and resumes instruction execution using the previously saved current machine state. The sleep mode is used to effectively pass control from one processor to another. In a specific embodiment, the currently active processor will resume operation after a sleep mode unless the user overrides that default selection. In another specific embodiment, the currently active processor selects which processor will become active following a sleep mode transition. In another specific embodiment, different processors share a common instruction set but each has additional unique characteristics, and the currently active processor selects a processor having characteristics matching the requirements of a specific phase of a computational process. In another specific embodiment, a notebook computer has two processors, one being very low-powered for extending battery life, the other being very fast for multimedia presentations and heavy number crunching. A user selects a processor appropriate for the intended use.
