    • A method for providing audio-only recording is disclosed. According to the method, a combined video stream and an audio stream are received from a source. The audio stream is digitized, if in analog form. The digitized audio stream is compressed using an audio encoding engine. The encoded audio stream is saved in a storage device. The storage device can be local or on a network. In the case of the input A/V signal being a multiplexed and compressed digital signal, the audio segment(s) are separated using a demultiplexer and saved in a storage device. The encoding format of the stored audio data follows that of the original audio data embedded in the multiplexed A/V stream. To store the audio data in a different encoded format, the audio data is first decoded using an appropriate audio decoder and then re-encoded in the desired encoding format. Alternatively, an audio transcoder can be used to store the audio data in the desired encoding format.

    • The present invention describes a decentralized symmetric configuration of digital video recorders (DVCRs) for monitoring, controlling, analyzing, recording, playback and streaming of audio/visual (A/V) media over a network. Each DVCR is an autonomous device able to operate in its local environment as well as access and operate another DVCR available on the network to facilitate the overall working of the disclosed system. Each DVCR also exhibits storage fail-safe feature whereby it recovers data automatically if storage media gets corrupted such as due to sudden power failure. A DVCR can be configured to scan the network for other DVCR units. A list of discovered DVCRs is displayed. Each DVCR can access, after authentication, any of the listed DVCR for configuration, monitoring, controlling, recording, playback and other available functionality over the network. The same controls used for operating a local DVCR, including use of buttons, can be employed to operate the remote DVCR, giving a virtual presence at the remote location. The functionality exhibited by each of the DVCR, can be identical. A plurality of the DVCR can thus form a decentralized, symmetric network in which there is no master or central controller.

    • A method for displaying video data instantly in reverse order is disclosed. According to the method, a compressed audio and video (A/V) stream is received from a source. The compressed A/V stream is demultiplexed into an audio stream and a video stream. The video stream has a number of compressed video frames which include a number of key frames. Each key frame is followed by one or more associated frames. Each of the compressed video frames is tagged with a tag. The tag associated with each key frame and file position of each key frame is stored in a table. The compressed video frames are decoded to generate a number of decoded video frames while maintaining their corresponding tags. During normal play, the decoded video frames are stored in a forward queue, and the decoded video frames in the forward queue are then outputted in a FIFO (first-in-first-out) order to a reverse queue and a display device for display. The reverse queue operates in a FIFO manner by discarding the oldest decoded video frame stored in the reverse queue when the reverse queue is full. During reverse play, the tag of the oldest decoded video frame in the reverse queue is recorded when a reverse play command is received, and the decoded video frames in the reverse queue are outputted in a LIFO (last-in-first-out) order to the forward queue and the display device for display. At the start of the reverse play, the forward queue operates in a LIFO manner until the most recently decoded video frames stored in the forward queue are discarded. Thereafter, the forward queue and the reverse queue operate in a FIFO manner. The recorded tag is used to retrieve one or more compressed video frames from the source. The retrieved one or more compressed video frames are tagged and decoded to generate one or more newly decoded video frames. The one or more newly decoded video frames are forwarded to the reverse queue.

    • A system and methods are disclosed for enhancing license plate recognition (LPR) and vehicle feature recognition processes in automatic vehicle access control, parking management, automatic toll collection and security applications. The system uses optical character recognition (OCR) to read license plates, while utilizing image feature recognition to verify plate reading results, and correct any OCR read errors, thereby increasing system accuracy. The system automatically controls the actuation of one or a plurality of gates/barriers to allow entry and exit of authorized vehicles to or from a premises, a parking lot or a toll station. In the event of failure of the OCR algorithm to identify a license plate of an authorized vehicle at an entry or exit point, the system allows a human operator or the driver/passenger of the said authorized vehicle to override its decision, and allow the vehicle to pass by opening the gate or barrier through external means including card reader, bio-metric scanner, key fob, cell-phone/smart phone, wireless transceiver, electro-mechanical switch/button, or PC/Web based application. This overriding action of opening the gate/barrier through the said external means is used to tune the license plate and vehicle recognition system, causing it to adapt its algorithms to perform better when it encounters the same vehicle again. Besides the above aspect, the present invention discloses fast and memory-efficient methods for image feature matching that are well suited for real-time situations where the set of reference image features is changing with time as new vehicles arrive. In addition to the above aspects, the present invention discloses an LPR database update method that simplifies license plate misread corrections process in the database, thereby improving the accuracy of subsequent database search queries. Furthermore, the present invention discloses methods in an LPR system that account for all the passing traffic by categorizing and recording license plate/vehicle captures as read-plate records, unread-plate records, or vehicles with missing license plates. In addition to the above aspects, the present invention discloses methods for switching between normal and privacy modes of operation and between different security levels.
