    • A method for performing an acquisition to a code-modulated spread spectrum signal comprises receiving the transmitted signal, sampling the received signal to form samples, forming at least one reference code corresponding to a code used in the modulation and forming a non-coherent search matrix on the basis of said samples. The non-coherent search matrix comprises elements in at least a first and a second dimension. The first dimension of the non-coherent search matrix represents the same frequency deviation but different code phases of the received signal, and the second dimension of the non-coherent search matrix represents the same code phase but different frequency deviations of the received signal. Each element is addressable in the first dimension by a first index and in the second dimension by a second index.

    • A method for determining a boundary of an information element, in which a repetition coded signal transmitted by satellites is received, which signal is modulated with information elements. A group of symbols forms one information element. A group of reference values are formed on the basis of the received signal. Of these reference values at least one vector is formed wherein the number of the elements corresponds to the number of symbols use in the transmission of the information element. A determination vector is formed on the basis of the at least one vector, whereafter the greatest of the elements of the determination vector is searched. The index of said elements indicates the boundary of the information element.

    • A method for detecting symbols is provided in a communication system. Symbols are received simultaneously through multiple spreading code channels. The received symbols are detected by processing one received symbol at a time, calculating reliability metrics recursively from a symbol received through a first spreading code channel for each possibly transmitted symbol by comparing each possibly transmitted symbol with each rake receiver finger adapted to the received symbol at a time, and selecting, based on the reliability metrics, a number of most probable candidate symbols for further processing. The process then calculates reliability metrics from a symbol received through a second spreading code channel using the reliability metrics for the most probable candidates. The method utilizes effectively cross-correlation properties of the spreading codes associated with the spreading code channels.
