    • In a digital data transmission system using sliding-window flow control with an adjustable window size on a non-transparent data connection whose nominal data transmission rate may vary during the connection, a receiving party delays the transmission of a retransmission request for a missing frame for the duration of a delay, so that the receiving party may ensure that the missing frame has not been moved to be sent later in the same group or in next groups. If the missing frame is received later in the same group or in the next groups within said delay, no retransmission request is sent. If the missing frame is not received by the end of the delay, a retransmission request is sent. This eliminates unnecessary retransmissions due to the wrong frame order, and resulting loading or congestion. This results in a higher throughput on the data connection. If grouping is not being used, retransmission is not delayed unless a delay is needed for another reason.

    • A digital telecommunications system and method for non-transparent data transmission includes a non-transparent data connection between a transmitting party and a receiving party, on which channel coding is employed. The transmission buffer buffers the data frames to be transmitted and stores the transmitted data frames until it receives an acknowledgement of successful reception. This is avoided by monitoring the quality of the non-transparent connection, and if the quality of the the connection drops to a specific threshold value, by changing the channel coding scheme of the connection for a more efficient one. Simultaneously, however, more channel capacity is allocated for the connection in according with the chosen channel coding scheme so that the original nominal user data rate can be maintained unchanged or nearly unchanged.

    • The present invention relates to a protocol-independent routing of data packets between a mobile station of a packet radio network and a party(Host) connected to an external network. In the invention, a data packet of an extraneous protocol(IPX) is transferred through a packet radio network using a second protocol as encapsulated in a data packet according to the second protocol. The transferring packet radio network does not thus need to understand the protocol of the transferred extraneous data packet or to be able to interpret the content of the data packet. A data packet network is connected to other packet radio networks, data networks or the backbone network between packet data networks via a gateway node(GPRS GSN), which uses the network-internal protocol towards the dedicated packet network and the protocol of each network towards other networks. When a data packet is transferred via a gateway node from a network into another network, the data packet is encapsulated in a packet according to the protocol of the new network. When the encapsulated data packet arrives in a node which supports the protocol of the encapsulated data packet, the encapsulation is stripped away and the data packet is routed forward according to the protocol of the data packet.

    • A method of paging a mobile station to establish a packet-switched connection in a mobile telephone network that supports a circuit-switched connection and a packet-switched connection. To establish a mobile-terminated circuit-switched connection, the mobile telephone network sends the mobile station a page request, as a result of which the mobile station switches to standby mode for a circuit-switched connection. To save the batteries and to reduce the need of processing, the mobile station listens only to the paging channels of the circuit-switched connection. To establish a mobile-terminated packet-switched connection, the mobile telephone network sends the mobile station a page request via a circuit-switched connection and subsequently sends the mobile station the additional information commanding the mobile station to switch to a packet-switched connection. After detecting the additional information, the mobile station switches to the packet-switched connection.

    • Within a cellular network, an incoming voice mail message is received at a voice mail server (20), adapted into a format suitable for transmission by a network connection which does not meet a delay requirement for delay sensitive information, dispatched to a mobile station (30), and received, readapted and stored thereat within a storing means (35). Adaptation, transmission, reception and readaptation conform to standards such as the GPRS and the UMTS. The voice mail message is dispatched directly to the mobile station (30) via an IP address of an ISDN address thereof. In this manner, instead of dispatching a message via the SMS, the sending of an adapted voice mail message directly to a mobile station (30) and storing it thereat makes it possible to avoid that a user has to poll a service center by calling in order to have the message delivered.
