    • An air bag module and steering wheel assembly includes an air bag module and a steering wheel. The air bag module includes a base plate and an air bag. At least one mounting member extends from the base plate and through the air bag to attach the air bag to the base plate. A cover has at least one vertically extending side wall including at least one cover slot in which the air bag and base plate are loosely seated therein while leaving the cover free for manual removal from the base plate. The air bag is trapped in the cover slot between side wall and the base plate. The steering wheel has a receiving area for receiving the module therein for attachment to the steering wheel. An upstanding capture plate forms a vertically extending wall generally surrounding the receiving area. The capture plate engages the side wall of the cover when the module is inserted into the receiving area and captures the side wall of the cover and the air bag between the base plate and the capture plate such that the cover and the air bag are anchored to the base plate for withstanding the forces of air bag inflation.

    • The present invention presents an inflator providing variable output inflation of an air bag cushion in response to full or reduced level deployment conditions. The inflator of the present invention includes a first chamber for storing an inert gas, a second chamber in fluid communication with the first chamber, and a third chamber in selective fluid communication with the second chamber, the third chamber for storing a heat modifier for varying a heat value of the inert gas. The inflator also includes a pyrotechnic device having a combustible material for heating the inert gas and a first initiator for actuating the pyrotechnic device upon first and second deployment conditions. A second initiator for opening the third chamber to the second chamber is provided wherein actuation of the second initiator causing the heat modifier to fluidly communicate with the combustible material and vary the heat value of the inert gas during a combustion process. The second initiator is actuated during second deployment conditions.

    • A steering wheel and air bag module assembly includes a steering wheel having a hub portion and a rim portion and a plurality of spoke portions connecting the hub portion to the rim portion. An air bag module is mounted to the hub portion and includes an air bag cover having a generally planar top surface. The top surface of the cover includes first, second, and third weakened portions defining a single Y-shaped tear pattern substantially covering the top surface of the cover. The air bag cover preferably has a generally planar top surface and generally vertical side portions extending generally downward from the top surface. The air bag cover includes a plurality of primary flap portions located substantially on the top surface and a plurality of secondary flap portions located substantially on the side portions. Advantageously, the primary and secondary flap portions and the Y-shaped tear pattern cooperatively provide an enlarged opening for air bag deployment.

    • A restraint cushion includes a generally quadrangular sheet of material having a central portion and four corner portions extending from the central portion. Each corner portion has a fold line adjacent the central portion and two free edges extending from the fold line and intersecting each other to form a point. A mounting portion extends from one of the corner portions. The mounting portion has a cushion opening therein for receiving inflator gas therethrough to inflate the air bag. The mounting portion has outer edges which are spaced apart from the cushion opening. The corner portions are folded about the fold lines in overlying relationship to the central portion and in mating relationship to corresponding outer edges of the mounting portions. Each of the corner portions has one of the free edges joined to one of the outer edges of the mounting portion and each of the free edges is spaced apart from the cushion opening. Thus, the mounting portion and cushion opening are not disrupted by the mating edges forming the cushion.
