    • A method for configuring a network, and a network configured according to such method, are provide in which a communication links laid out in a ring in a metropolitan area are partitioned into link segments, and managed according to a spanning tree protocol. The switches are configured to establish unique, mesh or tree type network configurations suitable for application to communication media arranged to support ring-based protocols. The method is used for connecting communication links arranged in a plurality of rings, which traverse a plurality of collocation sites in a metropolitan area. The method comprises configuring switches in the plurality of collocation sites to partition rings in the plurality of rings into a plurality of link segments providing point to point paths between switches at collocation sites in the plurality of collocation sites. The switches and link segments are managed according to a spanning tree protocol. In one embodiment of the invention, the configuring of switches includes allocating a first set of the link segments as a first ring and a second set of the link segments as a second ring, breaking the first and second rings by blocking transmission on a link segment in the first ring between the first pair of collocation sites, and by blocking transmission on a link segment in the second ring between a second pair of collocation sites. In addition, the method includes cross-connection the first and second rings by a communication link.

    • A first addressing message is received at a first switch in a network fabric indicating that a first virtual machine has undergone migration from connection to a first virtual switch at a first server to connection to a second virtual switch at a second server. A route advertisement message is then transmitted from the first switch to at least a second switch in the network fabric. This route advertisement is configured to cause the second switch to transmit a second addressing message to a second virtual machine connected to the first virtual switch. The second addressing message provides the second virtual machine with updated addressing information for the first virtual machine. A third addressing message is also transmitted from the first switch to the first virtual machine to provide the first virtual machine with updated addressing information for the second virtual machine.

    • A technique for detecting a loop between network devices such as customer and carrier edge devices involves counting the number of media access control (MAC) address moves that occur at a device and comparing the number of MAC address moves to a pre-established MAC move threshold. The technique includes artificially accelerating the MAC move count related to a MAC address when the MAC address is moving between a set of ports at which the MAC address was previously found. The MAC move count is artificially accelerated because movement of a MAC address between a set of ports at which the MAC address was previously found is a strong indication of loop. The MAC move count is artificially accelerated by weighting the MAC move count once it has been determined that a MAC is moving between a set of ports at which the MAC address was previously found.

    • A method and system is provided for distributed wireless access. The system includes an access concentrator and a plurality of antenna modules. The antenna modules are spread across a campus and are coupled to the access concentrator via network wiring. Each antenna module includes an antenna to receive and transmit signals. When incoming signals are received at the antenna, the signals are converted from a radio frequency to a lower frequency. The converted signals are then digitized. The digital signals are then processed by digital signal processing resources at the access concentrator. Then, the processed signals are forwarded out of the corresponding ports to a LAN switch.
