摘要： A passive optical network which is capable of full duplex digital transmission at high data rates and which also provides analog broadcast transmission is disclosed. A central station provides analog broadcast transmission at a first wavelength of light and full duplex digital transmission using second and third wavelengths of light. Optical networking units, electrically or wirelessly coupled to end users in the network, are optically coupled to the central station via passive optical network nodes. The optical networking units resolve the two broadcast streams from the central station employing compact optics configured on a transparent substrate and provide burst mode digital transmission up stream to the central station on a time division multiple access basis.

摘要： The present invention is an apparatus and method that identifies and localizes fiber breaks or faults automatically, utilizing a fiber optic data transceiver that has μOTDR functionality. The transceiver of the present invention is a single wavelength bi-directional transceiver that during normal operation sends and receives optical data streams in the same wavelength window using any protocol and reports the distance to the fault or multiple faults nearly instantaneously when the transfer of data is disrupted, without the need to have fiber lines dedicated for this purpose or physically connect and reconnect each fiber line to check for faults and eliminates the need to map out the distance to the remote transceiver.

摘要： A fiber optic transceiver adapted for use in an optical fiber data transmission system is capable of detecting reflection problems in fiber optic links and providing information related to the distance to the point of reflection. The fiber optic transceiver contains a fiber interface, a receiver, a transmitter, and a microcontroller. The microcontroller controls the transmitter to modulate the laser power to transmit impulse test data and the transceiver includes circuitry and microcode to detect reflection due to fiber connection problems. This enables trouble shooting during installation and/or reconfiguring the connection automatically, in response to a connection problem, and provides a physical layer link.
