    • A friction plate for a wet-type multiplate clutch is provided with a core plate and friction linings bonded on opposite sides of the core plate, respectively. Each of the friction linings is composed of plural segment pieces bonded at angular intervals on the corresponding one of said opposite sides. The segment pieces each have at least one first oil groove and at least one second oil groove. The first oil groove opens to a radially-inner side of its corresponding segment piece and has a closed end portion located in a radially-intermediate part of the corresponding segment piece, and the second oil groove opens to a radially-outer side of the corresponding segment piece and has a closed end portion located in another radially-intermediate part of the corresponding segment piece. The segment pieces are each provided in a friction surface thereof with at least one oil pocket closed at a circumference thereof.

    • Friction materials 21 and 22 of different types which differ from each other in terms of a material and a thickness are affixed to respective surfaces of the friction plate 20 and engage with surfaces 31 and 32 of respective separators 30. In the case where the friction materials 21 and 22 are affixed to respective surfaces of the core plate 23 of the fiction plate 20, when the friction materials 21 and 22 are aligned in this sequence along a horizontal direction in a drawing, the surface 31 of the separator plate 30 engages with either of the friction materials 21 and 22, and the surface 32 of the same engages with a remaining friction material. However, when the friction materials 21 and 22 are affixed alternately in different sequence, either of the friction materials 21 and 22 engages with both sides of one separator plate 30.

    • A lockup clutch for a torque converter is provided with a friction lining. The friction lining is divided into a radially-outer-side friction lining and a radially-inner-side friction lining. μ-ν characteristics of the radially-outer-side friction lining have a positive gradient to inhibit occurrence of a shudder by a stick-slip which takes place. The radially-inner-side friction lining is equipped with a large coefficient of static friction to provide large torque capacity during a clutch engagement. The radially-outer-side friction lining is bonded on a side of a piston in said lockup clutch.
