    • The invention relates to a method for cleaning a filter element (9) located in a filtering chamber (10, 11) and to a filter implementing the method. The filter includes an inlet (4) leading to the inlet side (10) of the filtering chamber, an outlet (6) starting from the outlet side (11) of the chamber, and a flow passage (13), which connects the chamber inlet side preferably to atmospheric pressure and by means of which a pressure difference can be generated between the different sides of the filter element in order to produce a flow impulse detaching solid matter accumulated on the element. In accordance with the invention, the inlet side (10) of the filtering chamber is connected in a first step to a confined buffer chamber (14) under lower pressure, the pressure equalisation between the chambers producing a flow impulse cleaning the filter element (9), after which the buffer chamber can be connected to atmospheric pressure. Such two-step pressure drop during cleaning of the filter element allows use of the elements in high-pressure hydraulic systems without exposing the element to risk of damage.

    • The invention relates to a spin-on filter (1) for filtering a flowing substance, especially a hydraulic liquid or lubricating oil in combustion motors. The filter (1) comprises a casing (7), open at one end, which is connected to a device assembly (6) including inlet and outlet ducts (4, 5) for the flow to be filtered, and a substantially cylindrical replaceable filter element (12) fitted inside the casing. The flow to be filtered passes through the filter element mantle, either radially-inwardly or radially outwardly. The cylindrical filter element (12) includes an end flange (16), designed such that its outer edge (17) simultaneously acts as a seal for the casing (7) end. The flange (16) can be made by injection-molding plastic in one piece and is equipped with flow openings (18) required for the flow to be filtered and communicating with the inlet or outlet ducts in the device assembly. The filter may include a joint ring (13), the end flange of the filter element forming a seal (17) between the casing and the joint ring. The filter also includes a collar (10) with a thread (2), by which the assembled filter can be connected as a unit to the device assembly (6) by screwing.

    • The invention relates to a filtering apparatus, the operation of which is based on alternating filtering and flushing stages. The apparatus comprises one or several filter elements placed into a filter housing supported by a casing, the filter housing being provided with an inlet assembly for the liquid flow to be filtered, an outlet assembly for the filtered liquid flow, and a channel for flushing the filter elements with air. Further, the filter housing is arranged to be prefilled with liquid before the next filtering stage is initiated after the flushing. According to the invention, a filling channel is directed into the filter housing through the casing, the channel being provided with a valve, which closes the channel at the same time as the filter housing is opened, for example, for changing the filter elements. Closing may be automatic. The filter housing may include a removable cover and an axle bar supporting the filter elements and arranged between the cover and the valve and operated by a spring, the bar being moved from its place from the effect of the spring upon opening the cover at the same time as the spring closes the valve.

    • The invention relates to a method and apparatus for filtering a liquid. The filtering is conducted using one or several filter elements in the filter housing, the operation being based on the alternation of filtering stages and air flushing stages. According to the invention, upon transferring from the flushing stage to the filtering stage, the filter housing is filled with liquid so that the liquid pushes the flushing air in the housing from the upper end of the housing into a separate air container so that air is compressed to a higher pressure in the container. During the filtering stage, air remains in the container, and after the filtering stage, air compressed in the container is allowed to push liquid out of the filter housing with its pressure. Further, the connection between the air container and the filter housing can be arranged so that air compressed in the container participates in the backflushing of the filter elements. The invention is especially applicable to an automatic filter filtering fuel or lubricant in a diesel motor.

    • The invention relates to a continuous-action filtering method, a filtering apparatus, as well as to the use of the discussed apparatus, as an automatic filter in the fuel or lubrication system of an engine. According to the invention, the apparatus comprises three filtering units, having a common inlet channel for a flow to be filtered, a common outlet channel for a filtered flow, as well as a common valve element provided with flow connections for controlling the flow in such a manner that the filtering units are in operation one at a time. An essential feature in the operation of the valve element is its ability to rotate around its axis and, furthermore, its ability to move between two different positions, the two filter units being operable alternately by rotating the valve element and the third filtering unit being operable by moving the valve. The valve element is constituted, e.g., by a cylindrical, axially movable spindle, which is also rotatable around its axis. In an automatic filter, the two filtering units can be used for a normal filtering process, wherein, with one of the units in operation at a given time, the other is subjected to a backflush, and the third unit is set in operation as said two units are being serviced.
