    • An applicator is provided for dispensing a first and a second protein solution to form a biological adhesive where the solutions can be deflected by a deflection assembly during dispensing for the adhesive to cover a broad or limited area. The applicator includes a housing having a housing head for enclosing therein a first reservoir containing a first component, and a second reservoir containing a second component. The first and second components are preferably fibrinogen and thrombin which intermix with water to form the first and second protein solutions, respectively. The housing further includes an elongated body portion defining a longitudinal axis for enclosing therein a conduit assembly having a first and a second conduit in communication with the first and second reservoir, respectively. The solutions intermix on an application site to form a fibrin sealant. In an alternate embodiment, the applicator includes two valves. A first valve opens and closes the proximal ends of two conduit assemblies for introducing water or other substance to the reservoirs. A second valve opens and closes the distal ends of the two conduit assemblies to permit and prevent the dispensing of the protein solutions.

    • A triblock copolymer having a proportion of units having the formula: ##STR1## as the end blocks, and the formula (I) randomly combined with a proportion of units having the formula: ##STR2## as the middle block finds particular advantageous use in manufacturing absorbable monofilament sutures and other surgical articles. A surgical article is manufactured from a synthetic absorbable copolymer formed by copolymerizing glycolide with 1,3-dioxan-2-one (trimethylene carbonate) wherein a combination of the monomers is substantially completely polymerized before the addition of the other monomer in the presence of a difunctional initiator at or below about 180.degree. C.; glycolide is added and the temperature increased up to about the melting point of poly glycolide to form a triblock copolymer with a proportion of units having the formula: ##STR3## as the end blocks, and the formula (I) randomly combined with a proportion of units having the formula: ##STR4## as the middle block.

    • Composite materials have a core portion formed from a polyalkylene oxide initiated block copolymer having one of the blocks made from hard phase forming monomers and another of the blocks made from random copolymers of soft phase forming monomers and at least one shell portion formed from a block copolymer having one of the blocks made from hard phase forming monomers and another of the blocks made from random copolymers of soft phase forming monomers joined to the core portion. Hard phase forming monomers include glycolide and lactide while soft phase forming monomers include 1,4 dioxane-2-one, 1,3 dioxane-2-one and caprolactone. In a preferred embodiment, the core portion is coextruded with the shell portion to form a composite filament or sheet. The composite materials may be used as sutures or formed into medical devices or surgical articles for implantation within a living organism.
