    • The application is directed to a methods and apparatus for intelligent network service provision, in particular in a wireless network. The method comprises the steps of: storing network user status information at a first network element; receiving at the first network element a message from a second network element, said message associated with a change in network user status information; updating said stored information; and providing services to said network user dependant on said network user status information. This enables a network user to receive the services to which he is entitled without interruption when the user's identity code changes, for example when a SIM card is replaced. It further enables efficient use of network resources by prevention of signalling to users who are no longer entitled to receive certain services.

    • The present invention provides a method of establishing a call to or from a user equipment in a wireless communication system comprising a first wireless network and a second wireless network, the second wireless network having an association with the first wireless network, the wireless communication system having a serving node and an application server capable of communication with said serving node, and the method comprising: receiving a message from said serving node at the application server, said message having information regarding network capabilities of said user equipment; and determining at the application server whether to anchor said call in the first wireless network or the second wireless network dependent on said information regarding network capabilities of said user equipment.

    • In accordance with a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of signalling in a communications network comprising a user equipment, a first radio access network, a second radio access network and a core network, the core network comprising a first packet switched network control node communicatively coupled to the first radio access network, a circuit switched network control node communicatively coupled to the first radio access network, and a second packet switched network control node communicatively coupled to the second radio access network, wherein the second packet switched network control node is capable of forming an association with the circuit switched network control node, in dependence on the user equipment performing an update to the second radio access network, to enable one or more features which employ said circuit switched network control node, the method comprising: receiving a first update of the user equipment from the first radio access network towards the first packet switched network control node; subsequent to the receipt of said first update, receiving an update of the user equipment from the second radio access network towards the second packet switched network control node; sending a context-related message from the second packet switched network control node to the first packet switched network control node, the context-related message comprising association requirement context data indicating an association requirement between the second packet switched network control node and the circuit switched network control node; and receiving a further update of the user equipment from the first radio access network towards the first packet switched network control node, wherein said context-related message is sent before said further update of the user equipment from the first radio access network is received. This has an advantage that the sending of the context-related association requirement context data is independent of the further update of the user equipment towards the first packet switched network control node. The sending of the association requirement context data may thus be reliably achieved even if the receipt of the further update causes suppression of the sending of context-related messages.

    • A method and apparatus for providing access of a user equipment to a data network via a wireless communication system is provided. According to an embodiment of the invention, a method of providing access of a user equipment to a data network via a wireless communication system, the user equipment having an associated subscription profile, the wireless communication system utilising access point identifiers for associating subscribers with specific packet data networks, said subscription profile including at least one access point identifier, the method comprises; setting subscriber profile parameter data in said subscription profile; receiving a first message sent from said user equipment requesting connection using a first access point identifier; determining on the basis of said subscription profile whether or not said user equipment may be connected using the first access point identifier; and dependent on the determination being negative and dependent on the subscriber profile parameter data being set, providing access to a packet data network using a different access point identifier.

    • A mobile communications system incorporates a plurality of home location registers on which subscriber data is stored such that each subscriber is allocated to a selected one of the registers for voice and/or data calls. Request messages for subscriber data can be routed to any home location register which responds to that request when the data for the respective subscriber is stored on that home location register. If the data for the respective subscriber is not stored on that home location register, the message is provided with an indicator component and is rerouted to another home location register for a further processing attempt. The number of times a message is rerouted is limited to prevent perpetual circulation of messages relating to unknown subscribers.
