    • A sensing device for remotely reading the position of the needles of a gas meter. The gas meter having a plurality of meter needles. The sensing device including directional magnetic field emitters each having a north and a south pole that are spaced from one another along a first pole axis and a second pole axis, respectively. The magnetic emitters being secured relative to respective needles such that the pole axes are perpendicular to the respective needle axes. The emitters producing directional magnetic fields that follows the position of the needles as they rotate. The device further including position sensors positioned over the emitters. The sensors reading the orientation of the respective magnetic fields sending this information to a processor for calculating the position of the first and second needles based on the orientation of the respective magnetic fields. The device includes a transmitter for transmitting the position of the needles to a remote location.

    • The invention relates to a method and apparatus for performing state-table driven regression testing. More particularly, the invention relates to an application wherein a release build is used without the use of a debug build, which ensures release of the same code that was tested with the exception of the device driver. In a third embodiment, the tested code is the same as the release code, thereby enhancing quality control, quality assurance, verification, and/or validation procedures are maintained. In one embodiment of the invention, at least one state table is used in testing release code. In another embodiment, the test code is developed using a first platform and the release code is used on a second, distinct platform. In yet another embodiment, the invention relates to regression testing using simulated faults as monitored through log files.

    • Methods and apparatus for improving the quality of images generated by reduced resolution video decoders and new and improved video decoders which produce reduced resolution images are described. Methods and apparatus for identifying conditions within an image which may significantly degrade image quality if particular portions of the image are used by a reduced resolution decoder as reference data are described. In particular, techniques for identifying blocks of pixels, referred to as constant block regions, having approximately the same intensity in terms of luminance values, are discussed. High contrast vertical and/or horizontal edges will cause significant prediction errors in images generated by reduced resolution decoders under certain conditions. Methods for assessing when such conditions exist and a significant prediction error is likely to occur are described. In addition methods and apparatus for minimizing the effect of such prediction errors in downsampling decoders are also described. One specific embodiment is directed to a new video decoder which decodes portions of a single image, e.g., frame, at different resolutions. Areas of the image along high contrast vertical or horizontal edges are decoded at full resolution while other portions of the same image are decoded at reduced resolution. Identified constant block areas found in multiple frames are decoded at even lower resolution than other image areas. By decoding and storing portions of reduced resolution images at full resolution for reference purposes, the risk of prediction errors resulting from the use of downsampling on reference frames is reduced.
