    • A modular casing for a remote control comprises a keyboard having keys thereon for selecting a predetermined function or channel selected from a group of keyboards having different layouts or shapes of keys and adapted to mate with a circuit board having switches thereon corresponding to the keys; an upper housing member having ports for receiving corresponding keys of the keyboard which extend outwardly at least partially through the ports when coupled thereto which is selected from a group of upper housing members having different layouts of ports for different layouts or shapes of keys and with or without an overlay panel; a panel section with grooves; and a lower housing member. The upper member is slidingly received in the grooves of the panel section to form a unitary cover which is secured to the lower housing member by screws or snap-fit interaction.

    • The universal remote control system includes input means, signal output means for supplying a signal to a controlled device and a central processing unit coupled to the input means and the signal output means, no ROM, and a single non-volatile, read-write RAM coupled to said central processing unit.The RAM in the ROM-less microprocessor system is loaded by carryout out the following steps: (a) disabling the central processing unit; (b) connecting a separate microprocessor system to said RAM; (c) transferring instructions and/or data to said RAM; (d) re-enabling the central processing unit to enable the central processing unit to execute the instructions so transferred. The control codes of any of a diverse plurality of remote control transmitters are learned, stored and reproduced by carrying out the following steps: (a) receiving a transmission of a train of pulses from a remote control transmitter; (b) recording the point-in-time of an edge of each pulse in a train of said pulses; (c) transforming the recorded point-in-time data into a list of instructions for generating a replica of said train of pulses; (d) timing the duration of a train of said pulses; (e) timing the period between trains of pulses; (f) associating a function key of a universal remote control device with said time duration of said train of pulses and said list of instructions for generating a replica of said train of pulses; (g) determining whether or not repetitions of the transmission of train of pulses is present; (h) ignoring repetitions of the train of pulses; (i) noting that repetitions are present; and (j) storing for use in a universal remote control device, the information acquired in steps (c), (d), (e), (f) and (i).

    • The universal remote control comprises: light emitting circuitry; driver circuitry coupled to the light emitting circuitry; a microprocessor including a CPU coupled to the driver circuitry, structure, such as a keyboard, coupled to the CPU for communicating "code signal generation sequences" including a "code generate command" signal followed by a "code setting" signal to the CPU, a memory for storing information therein coupled to the CPU, program instructions stored in the memory, and, signal determining and function code creating program and circuitry associated with the memory and the CPU for determining when a "code signal generation sequence" has been received and for using the "code setting" signal of the sequence received to create a function code, comprising, a specific IR blink code, defined by a series of infra-red "light on-light off" pulses, defining a code signal for causing a controlled apparatus to execute a specific function, e.g., "volume up", and for energizing the driver circuitry to cause the light emitting circuitry to emit the specific series of infra-red "light on-light off" pulses defining the specific code signal to the controlled apparatus.
