    • A matrix display device comprises a matrix of optically addressable pixels (Pij) with a light sensitive element (LSij) which receives data light (Lj) to control a state of the light sensitive element (LSij) depending on the data light (Lj), and a pixel light generating element (LGij) which generates an amount of pixel light (LMij) depending on the state of the light sensitive element (LSij). A select driver (SD) supplies select voltages (SVi) to lines (LRi) of the pixels (Pij), the select voltages (SVi) having a level which does not allow the amount of pixel light (LMij) of the pixel light generating elements (LGij) to be substantially changed for not selected lines (LRi), the select voltages (SVi) having a level which does allow the amount of pixel light (LMij) of the pixel light generating elements (LGij) to be changed for a selected one of the lines (LRi). At least one data light generating device (ALj; LAS) directs the data light (Lj) to the light sensitive element (LSij). A data driver (DD) receives input data (ID) representing an image and controls the at least one data light generating element (ALj; LAS) to produce an amount of light in accordance with the input data (ID).

    • A flat panel display apparatus comprises plasma discharge cells, which formed between a first base plate (2a) and a second base plate (1a). The first base plate (2a) has pairs of sustain electrodes (2b, 2c), and a second base plate (1a) has data electrodes (1b). Between said electrodes (2b, 2c, 1b) discharge volumes are formed. The device further has a drive circuit which comprises a circuit for providing data to the discharge cells. The display device comprises a conductive layer (51, 72, 91, 101) on the first (2a) or second substrate (1a) for both of a pair of sustain electrodes (2b, 2c). Said conductive layer (51, 72, 91, 101) extends outside the discharge volume (4) and forms an internal capacitance (Cpar) in the display device which capacitance is in parallel to the capacitance formed in operation by the pair of sustain electrodes and the discharge.

    • An optical path length adjuster (53) enables electro-optical control of a physical path length between two optical elements, suitable for use in the adjustment of an optical path length within three dimensional display devices that generate a virtual image within a defined imaging volume. The adjuster varies an optical path length between an input optical path and an output optical path and includes: a plurality of first optical (61) elements and second optical elements arranged in alternating sequence along an optical path, each first optical element (62) for determining a polarisation state of a light beam passing through that element and each second optical element for selectively transmitting or reflecting a light beam incident on that element depending on the selected polarisation state of the incident light beam, wherein the optical path length traversed by an input beam on the optical path can be varied by is selecting a particular second optical element at which reflection of the input beam is to occur, the reflected input beam emerging along the output optical path.
