    • The present invention relates to a process for the production of coatings by coating substrates of any type with a coating composition of which the binder consists essentially of a mixture of:(a) a polyisocyanate component and(b) at least one organic polyhydroxyl compound, distinguished by the fact that the polyisocyanate component(a) is a reaction product obtained from:(i) a polyisocyanate mixture which, in addition to from about 20 to 80%, by weight, of 2,4'-diisocyanato diphenyl methane, contains a total of from about 80 to 20%, by weight, of 2,2'-diisocyanato diphenyl methane, 4,4'-diisocyanato diphenyl methane and, optionally, higher nuclear polyisocyanates of the diphenyl methane series and(ii) a polyhydroxy polyether containing at least one tertiary amine nitrogen atom and having an average molecular weight of from about 500 to 10,000 or a polyhydroxy polyether mixture containing at least one such polyhydroxy polyether and having an average molecular weight of from about 500 to 10,000.components (i) and (ii) having been reacted in an NCO:OH equivalent ratio of from about 300:1 to 10:1 to form a reaction product containing free isocyanate groups and urethane groups.

    • The invention relates to a process for the production of sulphonic acid ester group-containing polyhydroxyl compounds having an average hydroxyl functionality of from 1.5 to 4, comprising reacting(a) paraffin sulphochlorides which are obtained by sulphochlorination of paraffins containing from 10 to 18 carbon atoms or of industrial mixtures of these paraffins, with unreacted paraffins and/or with chloroparaffins, having saponifiable chlorine content, based on the total weight of component (a), of from 5 to 15% with(b) an alcohol which is at least trihydric and which contains primary and/or secondary hydroxyl groups within the molecular weight range of from 92 to 250 or with mixtures of polyhydric alcohols having a molecular weight in the range of from 62 to 250 with an average hydroxyl functionality of from 2.5 to 5in the presence of hydrogen chloride acceptors while maintaining an equivalent ratio of hydroxyl groups to sulphochloride groups of at least 2:1 with the optional removal of sulphochloride group-free paraffin and/or chloroparaffin and excess alcohol from the reaction mixture after the reaction.

    • The present invention is concerned with a new class of compounds prepared by reacting cyclic aminals of the formula ##STR1## with polyisocyanates of the formula R.sub.5 (NCO).sub.m+n to yield ##STR2## and with this process for obtaining said compounds, as well as the use of such compounds in polyurethane chemistry. If such compounds are free of isocyanates (n=0) they are useful as latent cross-linkers or hardeners activatable by heat or moisture. If such compounds carry free isocyanate groups (n=1 or 2) there are useful as synthetic resin precursors. In the above formulaem represents an integer of from 1 to 3, andn represents 0, 1 or 2, and the sum of m+n is 2 or 3,R.sub.1 represents an aliphatic hydrocarbon group which is optionally cyano-substituted and which has from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, a cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon group having from 5-10 carbon atoms or an araliphatic hydrocarbon group having from 7-10 carbon atoms;R.sub.2 represents a divalent aliphatic hydrocarbon group having from 2 to 6 carbon atoms, at least two carbon atoms being situated between the two nitrogen atoms;R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are identical or different and represent hydrogen, aliphatic hydrocarbon groups having from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon groups having from 5 to 10 carbon atoms or aromatic hydrocarbon groups having from 6 to 10 carbon atoms, or the two groups R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 together with the carbon atom of the heterocyclic ring may also form a 5-membered or 6-membered cycloaliphatic ring; andR.sub.5 represents an (m+n)-valent group such as that which can be obtained by the removal of m+n isocyanate groups from an (m+n)-valent polyisocyanate.
