    • An apparatus and process are provided for induction heat treatment of electrically conductive workpieces. The inductor assembly is formed from a single piece inductor that utilizes an electrically non-conductive top, side and bottom frames to hold flux concentrators in place over the sides of the inductor. Flux concentrators can be changed by unfastening the frame members, removing the existing flux concentrators, inserting new flux concentrators, and fastening the frame members. One or more of the frame members may serve as a receiving chamber for supply of a quench medium to an induction heated workpiece positioned in an opening in the inductor.

    • A contour hardening apparatus for flat steel work pieces, such as gears, having convoluted surfaces around their circumferences, the apparatus including an annular inductor housing, a mandrel in the center of the inductor housing, and air bearing rotatably mounting the work piece on the mandrel, an air nozzle on the inductor housing aimed at the convoluted surfaces and operative in an ON condition to direct a jet of compressed air against the convoluted surfaces to develop on the work piece a first turning moment in a first direction to rotate the work piece in the first direction during heating, an oil manifold on the inductor housing supplied with oil under pressure and including a first plurality of oil nozzles in the plane of the work piece each oriented to direct a jet of oil at the convoluted surfaces to develop on the work piece a second turning moment opposite the first turning moment, and means to supply the oil manifold with oil under pressure when the air nozzle is in an OFF condition. The jets of oil from the first plurality of nozzles stop the rotation of the work piece at the onset of oil quench.

    • The teeth and roots of a gear are contour hardened by induction at a single work station with a single solid state power supply. The inductor or coil is full-faced and encircles the gear during the preheat and final heat steps of the process. The power supply energizes the inductor with alternating current of a single frequency in the general range of 50-100 kHz according to a predetermined schedule of on-time and power level. The supply of current to the inductor is such that the time required for the supplied power level to achieve the scheduled power level in the final heat step is no more than approximately one-third of the scheduled final heat time.

    • A method of case hardening a steering gear rack bar having a plain cylindrical barrel portion and an integral toothed portion on which are formed a plurality of rack gear teeth each having a predetermined helix angle relative to a longitudinal centerline of the rack bar. The method includes forming an induction coil having a linear section and a spiral section with a helix angle equal to the helix angle of the rack gear teeth, locating the rack bar inside the induction coil with the barrel portion thereof juxtaposed the linear section of the induction coil and with the spiral section of the induction coil surrounding the toothed portion, rotating the rack bar about its longitudinal centerline while passing alternating electric current through the coil to concurrently induction heat both the barrel portion and the toothed portion, and quenching the rack bar after the alternating current is turned off.
