    • Two support structures, each having a plurality of downwardly extending, substantially equally spaced pressing members connected thereto, each with a hydraulic jack interposed therebetween, are provided extending over the entire width of a stack of sheet materials to be cut on both sides of the torch of an associated gas cutting apparatus. During a cutting operation, the support structures and those pressing members which are located within a predetermined range around the torch are operated incident to movement of the torch under the control of a numerical control system, thereby to hold the individual sheet materials in tight pressure contact with each other at portions where they are to be cut, as the torch moves.

    • A method of constructing a marine float structure, such as a large-sized ship structure, is accompolished by assembling a number of divided ship portions on a ship building base. The first divided portion is transported on the water surface by means of a composite pontoon which is so constructed that each individual portion thereof can be separated from the other up and down or forwardly and backwardly. Then the composite pontoon is caused to sink down in the water so that said first divided portion of the ship can float of its own accord on the water surface. Subsequently the second divided portion of the ship is transported on the water surface using the same pontoon as mentioned above. A part of the composite pontoon is separated from the remaining body and allowed to sink down in the water while said second divided portion of the ship is held by the remaining portion of the pontoon. The separated part of the pontoon is used to float said first divided portion of the ship on the water surface, thereby combining both divided portions of the ship in a single unit on the water surface.

    • A support for a cutting torch is mounted on rails extending along opposite sides of a support for a stack of metal plates to be cut, and a mounting member for the torch is displaceable longitudinally of the support so that the torch may be moved both longitudinally and laterally of the stack of metal sheets. A second pair of rails extend along opposite sides of the support for the stack, and receive rollers mounting a pair of mounting structures extending in spaced, parallel and interconnected relation across the stack of sheets on opposite sides of the torch. The supporting structures have hydraulic jacks extending downwardly therefrom at equally spaced intervals therealong, and each hydraulic jack has a roller at its free end engageable with the top sheet of the stack so that the sheets of the stack may be compressed. Feelers are provided before and behind each roller to detect cuts in the stacked sheets so that the pressing rollers, when arriving at a cut, may be released from the stack temporarily and then reengaged with the stack. The rail supporting the rollers for the supporting structures of the hydraulic jacks are designed to limit upward movement of these rollers to thus absorb the reaction forces when the hydraulic jacks press the pressing rollers against the stack.
