    • A Global Positioning System (GPS) updates an internal map database in real-time. The system has a module for collecting environmental data, a module for processing environmental data, and a module for conducting environmental data. The collecting module receives position data real-time and judges its usability. The processing module can transform the received data's format, so that the data format will be compatible with the system format. The module for conducting environmental data can insert received data and compare data to be inserted with existing system data to judge whether the GPS data should be updated. The goal of updating the system map database on the GPS in real-time is thus accomplished by the three modules.

    • A method for retrieving vocabulary entries in a mobile phone is disclosed. The mobile phone includes a screen and a text file. The text file has a plurality of vocabulary entries. Each vocabulary entry is stored in a number of languages in the same text file. The method includes opening files according to the number of languages in the text file, storing vocabulary entries expressed in the same language in the same file, giving a same index for every vocabulary entry having the same meaning expressed in different languages, according to the index retrieving the vocabulary of the same meaning expressed in a different language in one of files, and displaying the vocabulary entry on the screen.

    • In a computer database synchronization method, a first database with first object data and a second database with second object data are established in a personal computer and an electronic dictionary, respectively. First and second synchronization status tables are established for each of the first and second object data, respectively. The synchronization status tables are modified from a first state, indicating that the corresponding object data is synchronized with the first or second database, to a second state, indicating that the corresponding object data is not synchronized with the first or second database, when the corresponding object data is edited. Synchronizing of the first and second databases can begin when a communications link is established between the personal computer and the electronic dictionary. During synchronizing, the personal computer retrieves the second synchronization status tables from the electronic dictionary, and compares the second synchronization status tables with the corresponding first synchronization status tables. Based on the results of the comparison, the personal computer retrieves the corresponding second object data from the electronic dictionary, and updates the first database with the retrieved second object data, or transmits the corresponding first object data to the electronic dictionary for updating the second database with the transmitted first object data.

When a user tracks or marks passages in a file on display, the device (10) stores the user marked passages in a nonvolatile memory block (46). In operation, the user finger does not need to touch or press the infrared sensor (20). In addition, the passive infrared sensor (20) may be packaged under a cover to protect the sensor (20) from hazardous elements in the environment.
