    • A fuel filtering system having a valve which prevents the flow of fuel in the absence of a fuel filter. The filtering system includes a housing in which a fuel pump is at least partially disposed. A valve mechanism is located on the discharge side of the fuel pump and includes a valve member which is movable between open and closed positions which, respectively, allow and prevent fluid flow through the fuel line. A biasing member is provided for biasing the valve member into the closed position. The valve member is engaged by the mounting of the fuel filter to thereby open the valve mechanism. In the absence of an installed fuel filter, the valve member remains in the closed position to prevent the flow of unfiltered fuel to the engine.

    • A carburetor for an internal combustion engine has a conduit through which air is drawn into the engine, a source of fuel, and means for delivering fuel from the source to the conduit for mixing with air to form an air-fuel mixture combusted in the engine. An improvement comprises a throttle valve positioned at the inlet to the conduit and movable between a closed and an open position to control the quantity of air drawn into the engine.An outlet is defined for the fuel to be delivered to the conduit, fuel discharged through the outlet being atomized by the air flowing past the outlet.The air flowing past the fuel outlet flows therepast at substantially sonic velocities thereby to improve fuel atomization and enhance mixing of the air and fuel.

    • A fuel transfer apparatus for providing fuel to a vehicle engine from a plurality of fuel tanks. A transfer pump is positioned intermediate a pair of fuel tanks and is operable to transfer fuel therebetween. Fuel is provided to the engine from a first one of the two fuel tanks. Excess fuel is returned to the first one of the two fuel tanks. When the level in the first fuel tank is less than the level in the second fuel tank by a predetermined amount, the transfer pump transfers an amount of fuel from the second fuel tank to the first fuel tank. Fuel level sensors are utilized to monitor the level of fuel in the two fuel tanks and report to a microprocessor which controls the transfer pump. The microprocessor utilized to control the transfer pump may be incorporated into the transfer pump, may be a stand alone microprocessor, or may comprise an existing vehicle circuit board such as, e.g., the electronic control module (ECM). A three-way valve may be incorporated into the transfer pump so that the transfer pump can be additionally utilized to provide a priming feature for an engine driven fuel pump.

    • In operation, the main pump (24) is activated and the main value (18) is opened in response to the ignition switch (28) being turned ON to pump fuel from the fuel supply tank (12) to the injectors in the injector manifold (14). During the ON condition, the return control valve (48) is closed to prevent back flow from the injector manifold (14) to the fuel tank (12). In response to the ignition switch (28) being turned to the OFF condition, the main valve (18) is closed and the main pump (24) is deactivated and, most importantly, the return control valve (48) is opened and the return pump (40) is activated to place a negative or vacuum pressure on the upstream side of the injectors to return the residual fuel therein to the fuel tank (12). This prevents the residual fuel from leaking through the injectors and into the combustion chambers of the engine (10), which, in turn, would make it difficult to immediately restart the engine (10) because of a fuel rich condition.

    • A food service table (10) is provided which includes separate heating and cooling systems enclosed within a housing (12) which may be selectively activated to heat or to cool food displayed and served on the table. Substantially all of the upper surface (13) of the housing (12) includes a food service area (14) in which is mounted a food service pan (24). Heating elements (26) and cooling coils (42) mounted on the pan (24) heat or cool foods displayed in the pan. The cooling system includes accumulator means (34) positioned at the lowest level of the cooling system for receiving and collecting refrigerant fluid upon activation of the heating system. Control means are provided to control the expansion and flow of refrigerant fluid during operation of the heating system.

    • A combination valve including a metal sleeve and a valve body. The valve body is formed of a resilient material and insert bonded or vulcanized to the metal sleeve and includes a cylindrical elongated member defining a passageway therethrough and an annular umbrella portion integrally extending from the elongated member. The elongated member is disposed within the metal sleeve and has converging flexible lips. The metal sleeve includes a plurality of prongs at one end and the valve body includes a top surface. The prongs of the metal sleeve extend to the top surface of the valve body, whereby the valve can be press-fitted into location without damaging the valve body. Between the prongs of the metal sleeve are gaps which permit the molding material to flow from the umbrella portion to the elongated member during the molding of the combination valve.
