    • An intake system for an internal combustion engine has an intake silencer 30 provided with an expansion chamber 33, and a connecting pipe 40 having an inlet 46 through which air from the expansion chamber flows, and an outlet 47 through which air flows toward combustion chambers. The connecting pipe 40 is made of an elastic material having rubber elasticity, and has a connecting part 41 connected to the intake silencer 30, an inner tubular part 42 extending from the connecting part 41 into the expansion chamber 33 and having the inlet 46, and an outer tubular part 43 connecting to a throttle device 50. The wall 42w of the inner tubular part 42 is provided with a communication opening 44 for connecting the expansion chamber 33 and the air passage 45 to make the expansion chamber 33 serve also as a resonance chamber. The outer tubular part 43 of the connecting pipe 40 is shorter than the inner tubular part 42 of the same. The intake silencer is compact and has a combined effect of expansion silencing and resonance silencing.

    • In a vertical engine, a bulged portion protrudes upwards, in conformity to a partially cylindrical outer wall of uppermost one of cylinders, on an upper surface of a cylinder block forming a bottom wall of a chain chamber accommodating a chain for driving a camshaft and a balancer shaft through a crankshaft. A pair of oil return bores for returning an oil in the chain chamber to an oil pan are provided in lower portions of the bottom wall on opposite sides of an axis of the bulged portion. The oil which has lubricated the chain in the chain chamber flows so that it is distributed to the opposite sides of the axis, and the oil is returned smoothly from the oil return bores formed in the bottom wall to the oil pan.

    • The invention provides a fuel supply device, which is possible to prevent undesired water entered into a fuel path from remaining therein with a simple arrangement. A fuel supply pipe for supplying fuel to each of the fuel injection valves of an engine disposed with a plurality of cylinders in a vertical direction includes a fuel path in longitudinal direction, a smaller diameter portion formed perpendicular to the fuel path and continuous with a fuel injection valve mounting hole, and a cap attached to a lower end of the fuel path. The cap is arranged so that the upper end of its protruding portion is positioned at the same or nearly same level as that in height of the smaller diameter portion. Thus, the water entered in the fuel supply pipe is exhausted through the smaller diameter portion without delay.

The idling chamber includes a cooling water communicating path that communicates with a cooling water supplying path, and a pressure adjusting valve that opens the cooling water communicating path when the value of the water pressure in the cooling water supplying path reaches a threshold value. When the value of the water pressure in the cooling water supplying path reaches the threshold value, the pressure adjusting valve opens and a portion of cooling water is guided to the idling chamber through the cooling water communicating path.
