    • A telecommunications network has first and second entities (201 and 202) which communicate by sending a packet (22) having a compressed header (24′). A header compression key (23) is associated with (e.g., included in) the packet. The header compression key has a first field (23A) which, in a first mode of the invention, is utilized exclusively for distinguishing between different flows of compressed packets (CIDs). In a second mode of the invention, the first field (23A) of the header compression key can be utilized either for distinguishing between the different flows of compressed packets or for distinguishing between different header compression identifiers. Whether the first field of the header compression key is employed exclusively for distinguishing between different flows of compressed packets (the first mode) or can also be employed for distinguishing between different header compression identifiers (second mode) depends on a value in a second field (23B) of the header compression key. In the second mode, a first subset of values for the first field of the header compression key is employed to distinguish between different header compression identifiers, while a second subset of values for the first field is employed to distinguish between the different flows of compressed packets.

    • The invention protects the security of a communication between a mobile radio and a radio access network (RAN). A connection is established through the RAN to support a communication with the mobile radio. The connection is configured with a first security configuration. One or more messages are sent over the connection using the first security configuration, each message having a message sequence number. When the connection needs to be configured to a second security configuration, an activation message sequence number associated with the reconfiguration is set. When the reconfiguration process is complete and the second security configuration is to be activated, the next message is sent over the connection with the activation message sequence number. Until that time and during the reconfiguration, when the mobile radio transmits a message with a message sequence number lower than the activation message sequence number to the RAN, it uses the first security configuration. An example of such a message is a cell update message or an area update message.

    • To facilitate handing of headers for Internet-transmissible packets, a radio access network sends to a mobile station (MS) a message which downloads configuration options for each of corresponding plural header adaptation strategies. The mobile station (MS) elects one of the plural header adaptation strategies and includes the elected strategy in a return message, whereby the radio access network configures a radio bearer for packets to be transmitted between the radio access network and the mobile station. In a first illustrated mode of implementation of the invention, the radio access network is a GSM/EDGE radio access network, with the downloading message being a radio bearer setup message and the return message sent from the mobile station to the radio access network being a radio bearer setup complete message. In a second illustrated mode of implementation of the invention, the message that downloads configuration options for each of plural header adaptation strategies is a handover command message for handing over control of the mobile station from a source radio access network to a target radio access network. In this second mode, the message which informs which of the plural strategies is elected is a handover complete message. The plural header adaptation strategies can include header compression (useful, e.g., for a multimedia service); header removal (useful, e.g., for a spectrum efficient voice packet voice bearer that reuses codec-specific channel coding); and no header adaptation.
