    • Mobility parameters, such as those used in handoff decisions, are based on the speed of User Equipment (UE) (10), measured at two points. UE speed estimates are taken at both the UE (10) and base station (12), and the two speeds compared. If the speeds match (or differ by less than a predetermined amount), one or more mobility parameters are adapted based on the UE speed. These parameters may include time to trigger (TTT), time to satisfy (TTS), measurement time, forgetting factor, β, measurement period (Tm), handover prohibit timer, MeasurementReportingmargin, HOmargin, hysteresis, and the like. The UE speed comparison may be performed at the UE (10) or at the base station (12). In one embodiment, a plurality of UE speed ranges are defined (e.g., low, medium, high), with corresponding mobility parameter values associated with each range.

    • The teachings presented herein enable a user terminal to perform a fast recovery from a radio link failure. In one aspect, the improvement in recovery time is achieved by commanding or otherwise causing the user terminal to perform radio link failure (RLF) recovery at a cell that is known to possess the user context, while considering that this cell should yield good radio conditions (if not the best) to the user terminal. A cell may be predefined for use by the user terminal in recovering its radio connection. Based on providing signal strength thresholds to the user terminal, for use in determining whether to use a predefined cell for reconnecting to the network, the user terminal attempts RLF recovery first in the predefined cell. By providing user context to the predefined cell in advance of a recovery attempt by the user terminal, the time for recovery is lessened. Note that the user terminal also may infer which cells are preferred.

    • The present invention relates to methods and devices for mobility management in a cellular communications system. A user equipment maintains (21) at least two sets of mobility trigger parameters. Each set of mobility trigger parameters corresponds to a predetermined user equipment speed range. The user equipment determines (22) a speed range that the speed of the user equipment falls into and selects (23), based on the determined speed range, at least one set of mobility trigger parameters to be used for performing mobility-based decisions. If the user equipment is in connected mode a network base station may select a set of mobility trigger parameters to be used for performing handover decisions based on a determined speed range of the user equipment. Advantages are that ping-pong mobility decisions may be avoided and it is sufficient to determine a range for the UE speed, which is less complicated than determining an accurate speed of the UE particularly in idle mode.
