    • A variable compression ratio engine includes a control actuator which has a simple structure, seals well internally, and provides high reliability. In the variable compression ratio engine, a connecting rod is divided into at least two portions. A control rod is operatively connected to a juncture of the connecting rod. A support shaft position of the control rod is displaced. The control rod is operatively connected to a right cylinder rod of a piston-type double-acting hydraulic control cylinder. A piston section of the hydraulic control cylinder is configured to selectively move in accordance with displacement of the support shaft position of the control rod. A channel is used to connect two hydraulic chambers divided by the piston section. The channel is configured to selectively control the flow of hydraulic fluid from the right hydraulic chamber to the left hydraulic chamber, and vice versa.

    • A hybrid vehicle includes an engine, a motor, a multi-stage gear transmission, and an actuator. The engine has a crankshaft, a crankcase, and a cylinder. The motor is provided on the crankshaft. Through the multi-stage gear transmission, an output of the crankshaft is changed to be used for traveling of the vehicle. The actuator is configured to automatically shift the multi-stage gear transmission and is provided in the crankcase in proximity to the motor. A radius from a center line of the cylinder to a part of the actuator farthest from the center line is shorter than a radius from the center line to a part of the motor farthest from the center line. The actuator has a width less than a width of the motor in a direction perpendicular to the crankshaft.

    • A valve operating device for an internal combustion engine is capable of increasing a negative valve overlapping duration when maximum lift amounts of an intake valve and an exhaust valve are small. The valve operating device is provided with intake-side and exhaust-side characteristic adjustment mechanisms for adjusting operating characteristics of an intake valve and an exhaust valve. Each characteristic adjustment mechanism has a control cam rotating integrally with a cam shaft, an electric motor that causes a holder pivoted on the cam shaft to rotate about the cam shaft, a sub-rocker lever pivoted on the holder and caused to oscillate by the control cam, and a valve cam that is caused to oscillate around the cam shaft by oscillation of the holder and the sub-rocker lever, for causing oscillation of main rocker levers. The electric motor causes the holder to oscillate in such a manner that the valve open timing of the intake valve is retarded as a maximum lift amount of the intake valve becomes smaller and the valve close timing of the exhaust valve is advanced as a maximum lift amount of the exhaust valve becomes smaller.

    • A plasma generating device for an internal combustion engine sets the generating-atmosphere pressure for generating plasma to the intake pressure, thereby achieving a reduction in the size, weight, and energy consumption of the plasma generating device and an improvement in combustibility. An internal combustion engine includes a throttle valve arranged in an intake passage having an intake opening that opens to a combustion chamber. An intake valve opens and closes the intake opening. A plasma generating device includes a plasma generator having a generating chamber for converting intake air into a plasma state to generate plasma. The plasma generating device supplies plasma to a downstream passage of the intake passage between the throttle valve and the intake valve. A gas control valve operates in conjunction with the throttle valve, and is arranged in an introduction passage between a clean chamber of the air cleaner chamber and a generating chamber.
