    • An improved technique for the active control of various combustion devices. This improved technique employs a flame kernel pulse actuator which produces periodic flame kernels by a spark ignition of a stoichiometric air and fuel mixture upstream of the combustion chamber. The discrete flame kernels are convected in a duct of premixed fuel and air which produce discrete pressure oscillations due to the energy release as each discrete flame propagates. Because the source of the energy release is essentially a chemical reaction, the flame kernel pulse actuator is able to produce a substantial amount of energy release even at the high operating pressures which are often encountered in many operational environments. These pressure oscillations may be adjusted to suppress or augment any combustion induced pressure oscillations as well as act to modulate the mixing layer between the fuel and air, thus controlling the downstream combustion process.The flame kernel pulse actuator comprises an actuator housing, a secondary fuel injection system, and an igniter. The combination of the igniter and fuel injection system produces a plurality of discrete flame kernels which are convected downstream toward the combustion chamber. The present flame kernel pulse actuator further includes a pressure sensor which is positioned so as to measure the acoustic oscillations in the combustion chamber and a controller device which uses the output of the sensor to control the frequency, phase shift, and amplitude of the discrete flame kernels.

    • An earphone has a body housing a transducer that is capable of generating an acoustic signal and directing the acoustic signal to an outlet in the body, the body being positionable in, on, or near an ear of user so that the acoustic signal can be directed into the ear canal of the user. The earphone also has an ear coupling mechanism comprising a sealing mechanism with a sealing member that is adapted to contact a portion of the ear of the user to at least partially create a seal between the ear canal and the external environment and a venting mechanism capable of venting air between the ear canal and the external environment, the venting mechanism comprising an air conduit that is adapted to communicate on one end with the ear canal and at another end with the external environment so that air can flow through the conduit to equalize a pressure differential across the sealing mechanism. The air conduit is sized and shaped so as to provide an improved audio performance over an earphone without the air conduit.

    • A chain tension sensor for a chain conveyor, the conveyor including a frame and a chain having a plurality of flights. The tension sensor includes a reaction arm and a load sensing pin. The reaction arm includes a first end, a second end opposite the first end, and a load pad. The first end is pivotably coupled to the frame by a pivot pin defining a pivot axis. The load pad is adjacent the conveyor chain and positioned to contact flights passing the load pad. The flights contacting the load pad exert a force on the reaction in a direction that is perpendicular to the pivot axis. The load sensing pin is coupled to the reaction arm such that the load sensing pin senses the force that is exerted by the flights.
