摘要： An ink composition for thermal transfer using a basic dye, or a cationic dye, is disclosed. The ink composition for thermal transfer contains the basic dye and an organic high polymer, with the basic dye being dissolved or dispersed into the organic high polymer with a solubilizing agent compatible with both the basic dye and the organic high polymer. The solubilizing agent is an amphipathic compound, preferably, having an HLB value of 7 or greater. By forming an ink layer containing the ink composition for thermal transfer on a base, an ink ribbon for thermal transfer is formed. A thermal transfer target sheet having a receptor layer containing an interlayer compound substituted by an ion exchangeable with the basic dye and a binder resin is used. The ion exchangeable with the basic dye is exemplified by an organic ion, such as an organic onium ion. The ink layer of the ink ribbon for thermal transfer and the receptor layer of the thermal transfer target sheet are superposed to face each other, and the basic dye contained in the ink layer is transferred onto the receptor layer by heating.

The fixing solution head (10) expels a solution (fixing solution) containing the intercalation compound. The composition for fixing a water-color ink contains an ion exchanger, such as, a clay based interlayer compound or an ion-exchange resin. The composition for fixing water-color ink contains a water absorptive resin or a heat-melting resin as a binder. A cover film for thermal transfer is formed by forming a water-color ink fixing layer consisting of the composition for fixing water-color ink peelably on a base material. An adhesive layer or a heat-melting resin layer is formed on the water-color ink fixing layer. The cover film for thermal transfer image is superposed and thermo-compression bonded onto a thermal transfer image or a thermal transfer image having a protective layer, with the water-color ink fixing layer, the adhesive layer or the heat-melting resin layer facing the thermal transfer image or the thermal transfer image having the protective layer. The water-color ink fixing layer is transferred and stacked onto the cover film for thermal transfer image.

The thermal transfer image may be formed prior to the transfer of the receiving layer on the substrate. Owing to the fixing of the cationic dye through ion exchange reaction, the fixing properties of the dye in the receiving layer can be significantly improved.
