    • Riveting apparatus of the type in which an elongated mandrel, having an enlarged head at one end and loaded with a plurality of the tubular rivets forming a column of rivets on the mandrel, is gripped by gripping mechanism at or near the end remote from the head, and reciprocated relative to an abutment (32), by relative reciprocation between the gripping means (43) and the abutment, the rivets in the column being fed forwardly along the mandrel so that the leading rivet nearest the mandrel head is positioned between the mandrel head and the abutment (32) and can then be set by moving the mandrel rearwardly relative to the abutment (32) so as to draw the head of the mandrel through the bore of the rivet while the rivet is supported by the abutment (32), includes pneumatically operated rivet-feeding mechanism for feeding rivets forwardly along the mandrel, a valve mechanism for shutting off the supply of air to the rivet feeding mechanism thereby to disable it, and the valve mechanism is responsive to the presence or absence of a mandrel in the gripping mechanism (43) the valve mechanism being closed in the absence of a mandrel and open only in the presence of a mandrel.

    • An apparatus for the pull-through blind installation of a headless tubular ferrule in a hole in a workpiece at a position therealong spaced from the nearer face of the workpiece includes an annular anvil for supporting the ferrule inside the workpiece hole; anvil supporting means for initially supporting the anvil at a position inside the workpiece hole; a mandrel having a stem extending through the anvil aperture; and an enlarged head. The apparatus further includes a pneumatically-operated retraction device for retracting the mandrel stem through the anvil aperture thereby to draw the mandrel head into the adjacent part of the bore of the ferrule while the ferrule is supported inside the workpiece hole by the annular anvil, thereby to enlarge the part of the ferrule more remote from the anvil into engagement with the workpiece; and a pneumatically-operated withdrawal device for withdrawing the anvil away from the ferrule to allow the mandrel head to be withdrawn completely through the remainder of the bore of the ferrule, to complete installation of the ferrule.

    • A tubular body (74, 102) having a deformable internal annular skirt is made from a blank (10, 80) having a stopped bore (20) which terminates at an end wall (24). First, an aperture (40) is formed in the end wall (24) to provided a through bore, of which a main region is provided by the formerly stopped bore (20). The aperture (40) is made to taper towards the main region and to a diameter substantially smaller than that of the main region. Material peripherally of the aperture (40) is then swaged towards and into the main region, and radially outwardly in the main region, thereby forming the swaged material into a skirt. The tapering aperture (40) can be formed by use of a punch (30) and a die (32) having a die aperture (36) larger than the punch diameter. By making the aperture (40) not radially symmetrical, the resulting skirt (70, 98) can be made of unequal lengths on opposite radii. The aperture (114) can be made non-symmetrical by using a punch slightly offset from the axis of the die aperture (36) or by making the end wall of different thickness on different radii.
