    • A vehicle control apparatus includes: a vehicle-mounted transmitter which transmits a first response request signal; a vehicle-mounted receiver which receives, from a portable device, a response signal to the first response request signal; and a controller which allows an operation for welcoming a user carrying the portable device to a vehicle according to a reception state of the response signal. When intermittently transmitting the first response request signal at predetermined intervals via the vehicle-mounted transmitter, the controller determines whether condition set in advance is established. When the condition is established, the controller transmits a second response request signal different from the first response request signal. When the vehicle-mounted receiver receives a response signal which is transmitted from the portable device as a response to the second response request signal, the controller continues to transmit the second response request signal via the vehicle-mounted transmitter.

    • A portable machine has a signal receivable area in which, when the portable machine approaches one of a plurality of LF transmitters provided to a vehicle at a first distance, a response request signal only from the LF transmitter is receivable by the portable machine and when the portable machine approaches one of the plurality of LF transmitters at a second distance shorter than the first distance, response request signals from the LF transmitter and any of the remaining LF transmitters are receivable by the portable machine. If the portable machine receives the response request signal from only one of the LF transmitters within a predetermined time period and the response request signal has an RSSI value not less than a threshold, control (door locking/unlocking, engine start, and the like) to the vehicle is inhibited.

    • A vehicle control device includes a plurality of LF transmitters transmitting response request signals that reach an area around a vehicle and an interior of a vehicle chamber, and a UHF receiver receiving a signal transmitted from a portable machine. The portable machine includes an LF receiver receiving the response request signal and a UHF transmitter transmitting a response signal. The LF receiver in the portable machine has a reception region in which the response request signals transmitted from at least two of the LF transmitters are receivable when the portable machine approaches the vehicle. Door locking/unlocking is permitted if the LF receiver in the portable machine receives the response request signals transmitted from at least two of the LF transmitters within a predetermined time period. In contrast, door locking/unlocking is inhibited if the LF receiver receives the response request signal transmitted from one of the LF transmitters.

    • A communication system includes: a vehicle-mounted communication device and a portable device. The communication device includes: a vehicle transmission unit which transmits a plurality of first signals to the portable device, and a vehicle reception unit which receives a second signal transmitted from the portable device. The portable device includes: a portable device reception unit which receives the first signals, a portable device controller which detects signal intensities of the received first signals, and which compares the signal intensities of the first signals, and a portable device transmission unit which transmits the second signal according to control of the portable device controller. The portable device controller sets an output value of the second signal to a predetermined value when a difference between the compared signal intensities of the first signals is equal to or less than a threshold.
