    • The invention relates to a security element for securing value documents which has magnetic material. Further, the invention relates to a value document, a transfer material and a method for checking such a security element or value document. Along the security element, for example along a longitudinal direction of the security element, there are disposed one or more, maximally five, magnetic areas and one or more, maximally five, gap areas. The extension of the magnetic areas or the gap areas along the security element is preferably chosen so great that the magnetic signals of adjacent magnetization steps that arise upon transport of the security element past the magnetic sensor interfere constructively with each other.

    • A method of checking value documents having a security element with a plurality of magnetic areas, including a high-coercivity magnetic area, a low-coercivity magnetic area and a combined magnetic area, which contains both the high-coercivity and the low-coercivity magnetic material. When all magnetic areas have been magnetized in a first direction, second magnetization is performed, which involves only the low-coercivity magnetic material being remagnetized parallel to the first magnetization in the opposite direction, but the high-coercivity magnetic material remaining oriented in the first direction of magnetization. Next, first magnetic signals from the security element are detected using a first magnetic detector, and second magnetic signals are detected using a second magnetic detector. The magnetic signals are used to identify each magnetic area of the security element as a high-coercivity, a low-coercivity or a combined magnetic area.

    • The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for recognizing forged documents of value, wherein the documents of value are illuminated with clocked excitation light of a light source. Within the bright phase of the excitation light a first luminescence intensity is detected, within the dark phase a second luminescence intensity. Because of the afterglow of the light pulses there is a residual fluorescence, which distorts the luminescence intensity in the dark phase. By linking the second luminescence intensity with the first luminescence intensity, e.g. by subtracting a scaled first luminescence intensity, a corrected second luminescence intensity is determined, which substantially corresponds to the phosphorescence signal of the document of value.
