摘要： Provided is a liquid crystal medium for an electro-optical liquid crystal display of an IPS mode which does not cause burning and which is suitable for achieving a relatively low threshold voltage and a short response time. The liquid crystal medium for an IPS mode display comprising 5 to 37.5% by weight of the first component (compound of Formula I) and 5 to 62.5% by weight of the second component (compound of Formula II) or the liquid crystal medium comprising 100% by weight of the first component, 5 to 62.5% by weight of the second component and 5 to 37.5% by weight of third component (compound of Formula III): wherein R1 to R3 represent a C1 to C10 alkyl group, an alkoxy group or an oxalkyl group (containing 1 to 4 oxygen atoms), or a C2 to C10 alkenyl group; X represents transcyclohexylene or phenylene; A represents —CO—O— or a single bond; and Y1 represents a hydrogen atom or a fluorine atom.

By combining a host liquid crystal composition composed mainly of a halogenated benzene derivative and having a high voltage-holding ratio of .DELTA..di-elect cons. of 4.5 to 7.5, with a dichroic pigment having a specified, molecular structure, there is exhibited an effectiveness that it is possible to obtain a guest-host liquid crystal active matrix display element of 3.3V drive having stability under high temperature.

摘要： A ferroelectric liquid crystal composition having a negative large dielectric anisotropy value, AC stabilizing effect at low voltages and yet high-speed response properties, and a light switching element using the composition are provided, which composition comprises at least two components at least one of which is a compound expressed by the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 each represent the same or different linear or branched alkyl group of 1-18C and l is 1 or 2, and having a negative dielectric anisotropy value.A preferred embodiment of the above composition contains at least three components A, B and C, one of which is the above compound of the formula (A) and components B and C of which are each selected from a group of specified compounds, and the respective proportions of components A, B and C being 5-50 weight %, 20-70 weight % and 5-40 weight % based on the total weight of the three, respectively.
