    • A combined stop and support arrangement is disclosed for confining the rear end of the return spring assembly of a railway vehicle cushioning unit between the laterally spaced, vertical flange portions of the longitudinally extending center sill of a railway vehicle underframe. The arrangement includes a plate secured to the rear end of the return spring assembly so as to extend generally perpendicularly to the longitudinal axis of the center sill and the line of action of the applied force from the cushioning unit. A pair of vertically spaced, horizontally arranged plates are secured to the rear face of the return spring assembly plate, and a pair of blocks are secured to the inner surfaces of the vertical flange portions of the center sill so as to nest between the horizontally arranged plates. The blocks thus function as stops for preventing rearward longitudinal movement of the return spring assembly and also to prevent vertical movement of the rear end of the return spring assembly with respect to the center sill. The plate on the rear end of the return spring assembly has a width substantially equal to the lateral spacing between the inner surfaces of the vertical flange portions of the center sill so that the rear end of the spring assembly is confined against lateral movement in the sill. A plurality of gusset blocks are secured to the upper and lower surfaces of the horizontally arranged plates on the return spring assembly rear plate, and to the outer surface of the latter plate, for increased strength.

    • An end of car hydraulic cushioning device has been provided for a type of railway car usually situated at the rear of a train. The device comprises a cylinder, a piston slidable in the cylinder, a yoke adapted to carry a coupler, and a return spring assembly for returning the piston to a neutral position in the cylinder. To cushion the forces acting on such a car, the device has a travel in a draft direction at least equal to its travel in the buff direction. The device also has draft and buff orifices in the cylinder for providing fluid flow therefrom and also has neutral orifices in the cylinder for returning fluid to the cylinder. The area of the draft, buff and neutral orifices are proportioned to cushion impact forces acting on such a car. The return spring assembly includes a coil spring which cooperates with a pair of brackets on the railway car and a pair of abutments movable with the piston to return the piston to its neutral position where it covers the neutral orifices.

    • A draft gear assembly for a locomotive or other railroad vehicle, wherein a hydraulic unit is mounted in a yoke and is arranged to cushion the impact of buff and draft loads applied to a coupler connected to the yoke. A plurality of return springs are mounted in the hydraulic unit so that the overall size of the assembly is reduced to fit a conventional locomotive draft gear pocket. A plurality of resilient pads are mounted in cavities in the coupler end of the yoke, and exert an aligning or centering force on the coupler when the coupler swings a predetermined number of degrees in either direction from a centered position. Such aligning or centering force is exerted on the coupler through one or the other of a pair of laterally spaced, longitudinally shiftable alignment plungers in the yoke. Cushioning and dissipation of the impact force of large buff and draft loads is achieved by restricting the flow of hydraulic fluid in the hydraulic unit of the draft gear assembly, such flow passing through orifices of a particular size and arrangement in the cylinder of the hydraulic unit to an internal reservoir in the unit and then to an external reservoir. Smaller, train handling loads are cushioned primarily through compression of a compressible liquid in the hydraulic unit, when such liquid is utilized as the hydraulic fluid.

    • Stop means for a railway impact absorbing device includes a stop member adapted to be secured to a portion of the sill structure of a railway car. The stop member has a base portion which is secured to the outside wall of the fixed sill structure of the car and horizontal inwardly extending portion which extends through a slot in the fixed sill to co-act with the cushioning device of the railway car. When used in a railway car with a sliding sill, the stop member also extends through a slot in the sliding sill of the railway car, and other stop members are secured to the sliding sill above and below the first stop member. The second stop members also co-act with the impact absorbing device.

    • The single acting impact absorbing device is interposed between the underframe center sill and the sliding sill of a railway car and has a single acting cylinder housed in a square hydraulic fluid reservoir, a first head of which normally abuts stop faces on a key housing fixed to the underframe center sill and a first set of stop faces fixed to the inner walls of the sliding sill. A spring rod secured to the piston rod retains a spring acting between the second head and a follower at the outer end of the spring rod, the spring stressing both rods in tension. A tube adjacent the second head houses the spring and restrains it against lateral buckling in compression, and filling access to the reservoir is had through filler tubes having their lower ends opening to the outer face of the second head adjacent the spring tube. A piston fixed to the piston rod normally is held adjacent the second head, and when the railway car receives an impact it moves relatively toward the other head, expelling fluid from the cylinder into the reservoir through a decreasing number of flow restricting orifices.
