    • An image processing apparatus of this invention reads raster-scanning type binary image data, and causes an outline extraction unit to extract outline vectors of an image. When a white raster detection unit detects that one raster data consists of all white pixels, it supplies the detection result to the outline extraction unit. Upon reception of this detection result, the outline extraction unit outputs the outline vectors extracted so far as a group of data to an outline smoothing & enlarging/compressing unit as a processing unit for executing outline smoothing processing or enlarging/compressing processing. In this manner, since this invention processes an image as a group of data divided in units of white rasters, advantages such as a decrease in required memory capacity can be expected.

    • Outline vectors representing an arrangement of pixels of a binary image obtained by a binary image obtaining unit are extracted by an outline extractor. From the extracted outline vector, isolated points are extracted. These isolated points are stored in an isolated point data generator 7 as information indicative of the position of isolated point. The outline vectors other than the isolated points are stored in the vector generator 3 as vector data. When a binary image is reproduced, the stored position information of the isolated points is developed to produce vector data by the isolated point data developer 8. Accordingly, since the isolated points are stored not in the form of outline vectors, but position information, the storage capacity for storing the outline vectors can be small. This construction is effective in halftone image in particular.

    • Contour vectors are detected by an outline detecting unit based upon a pixel of interest and pixels adjacent thereto read in a raster scanning sequence. A vector-data creating unit receives the contour vector and input data, calculates the difference between starting-point coordinates of continuous vectors, fits the value of the difference in a data packet whose number of digits conforms to the value of the difference and stores the data packet. The data packet is additionally provided with a code representing the length of the packet. An outline smoothing/zooming unit returns the stored difference value to ordinary coordinate expression and performs smoothing or zooming processing. A binary-image reproducing unit converts the contour vector into raster representation, and the resulting data is outputted. The acquisition unit and the extraction unit or creating unit eliminate unnecessary vectors and perform smoothing by an outline (vector sensing/elimination) smoothing and zooming unit. By virtue of this arrangement, the amount of contour-line data is reduced to reduce the memory capacity needed. Further, in a case where contour points of a binary image are delivered to immediately following processing, it is possible to greatly reduce the load of subsequent processing.

    • This invention provides an image processing method and apparatus. According to this invention, contour line data when viewed from a the main scan direction are generated on the basis of the connection relationship between a target line element and adjacent line elements before and after the target line element in one direction of continuous line elements, and a direction of an area to be painted out. It is then set that a pixel position of an odd-numbered contour encountered in a scan operation in the main scan direction indicates a forward rotation position of the area, and that an adjacent pixel position in the main scan direction of an even-numbered contour encountered in the scan operation indicates a reverse rotation position of the area. Thereafter, it is discriminated that a portion between an odd-numbered contour position, when viewed from a scan direction on each scan line, to a pixel position immediately before an even-numbered contour position is a portion inside the area of a closed figure, and remaining portions are outside the area of the closed figure.
