    • An actuator assembly for a computer disk drive includes a pivot shaft which defines a pivot axis for the actuator assembly, a pivotable actuator which encircles the pivot shaft, a bearing assembly disposed between the pivot shaft and the actuator, and a labyrinth seal adjacent to a lower edge of the bearing assembly. The labyrinth seal is incorporated into the pivot shaft and includes an axially extending ridge which is disposed in facing relation to a lower edge of the bearing assembly. The labyrinth seal also includes a reservoir disposed radially inwardly of the axially extending ridge, and a flange which extends radially outwardly of the axially extending ridge. The flange includes both axially and radially-facing surfaces which are disposed in facing relation to oppositely facing surfaces of the actuator. Very small air gaps are maintained between the labyrinth seal and the actuator assembly, on the order of 0.003 to 0.005 inch, in order to eliminate or minimize any actuator bearing lubricant migration or out-gassing into the disk drive assembly. An actuator shaft washer seal is provided adjacent to the upper edge of the bearing assembly. The actuator shaft washer seal is fixed to the actuator and extends radially inwardly toward the pivot shaft.

    • A latch housing for a carriage latch in a disc drive comprising a cantilever beam and a buckling beam. The cantilever beam and the buckling beam are so oriented in relation to each other and the path of the carriage that contact between a latching feature on the moving carriage and the carriage latch occurs with the beams at an original position and causes the cantilever beam to deflect in a cantilever mode and the buckling beam to deflect in a buckling mode until the kinetic energy of the moving carriage is converted to internal stresses in the material of the beams. Reactive motion of the beams due to these internal stresses is limited to a return to the original position by leashing action of the buckling beam. In a preferred embodiment, the latch housing is realized as a one-piece molded component, and the material of the component as well as the dimensions and shapes of the cantilever beam and buckling beam are all selected to limit the motion caused by contact between the moving latch feature and the latch to a single excursion from the original position to a maximum deflected position and back to the original position.

    • A disk array includes a mainframe chassis conforming to standard SCSI disk drive mechanical form factors, and a mother board and a RAID controller within the chassis. The chassis includes a pivotable access door shock absorber mounted on an inside surface of the door which permits electronic modules to be placed within the chassis, and which helps to control mechanical shock between the chassis and the enclosed electronic modules. The mother board interconnects electrical signals between the electronic modules, at least some of which comprise disk drives forming a redundant array of independent, or inexpensive, disks (RAID). One of the electronic modules is a secondary power supply module which is connectable to the mother board. The RAID controller is electrically connected to a system host power supply and a host interface bus, and through the RAID controller the mother board interconnects all the electrical signals between the system host power supply and the host interface bus with the secondary power supply module and the RAID disk drives.

    • An improved disk drive unit is provided for use in microcomputers such as personal computers and the like. The disk drive unit includes a substantially sealed disk drive housing and related circuit board with drive electronics carried by a common rigid chassis. A power connector plug is securely mounted onto the chassis at a rear margin thereof and cooperates with one or more interface connectors to permit simple slide fit installation of the disk drive unit into a computer system cabinet, such as a central processor unit for a computer. In addition, the disk drive unit includes improved shock mounts for supporting the sealed disk drive housing from the rigid chassis. The disk drive unit further includes a floating bushing arrangement for interconnecting the circuit board to the disk drive housing in a manner substantially isolating thermal expansion characteristics of the circuit board from the remainder of the disk drive unit.
