    • An induction heating coil for use in a cooking range or the like. The coil is defined by a flat spiral of electrically conducted wire having at least three radially related sections including a radially outermost section having closely spaced turns, a radially innermost section having closely spaced turns, and a radially intermediate section having widely spaced turns. In one form, the intermediate section turns are uniformly widely spaced. In another form, the intermediate section turns are arranged in widely spaced groups. The disclosed configurations provide a substantially uniform power transfer to the element being heated, such as a ferromagnetic utensil.

    • The provision in a range having an electrically energizable heating unit and a control for selectively causing energization of the heating unit from a power supply of an improved circuit for causing time-delayed initiation of energization of the heating unit for a period of time which is a function of the period of inrush current which occurs when the heating unit is energized. The circuit causes such a delay in the event the circuit senses a preselected power delivery from the power supply at the time of attempted initiation of energization of the heating unit. The novel circuit is advantageously utilized in a range having a plurality of electrically energizable heating units and assures that the heating units will be sequentially energized with a time delay between initiation of energization of each so that the total inrush current is substantially less than the sum of all of the inrush currents of the heating units concurrently attempted to be energized.

    • An appliance programmer, in particular an automatic washer programmer, employs a memory circuit and sequence control for establishing a predetermined program. The program may be altered by two techniques. A first technique includes the utilization of a circuit for sampling the circuit connections of the programmer so that any number of steps of the program can be varied to alter the entire program. This technique provides for the manufacture of an integrated circuit to establish a predetermined program and application of that circuit in a variety of appliances with different program requirements. A second technique utilizes operator control switches for manually altering the program and includes apparatus for locking out program modifications after a predetermined time interval at the initiation of program selection.

    • An appliance programmer, in particular an automatic washer programmer, employs a memory circuit and a sequence control for establishing a predetermined program. Included in the program are a program modification circuit and a rapid advance circuit whose functions are respectively to automatically modify the program inherent in the programmer and to rapidly step the programmer through its operational program. The memory and sequence control of the programmer are designed so that, absent the program modification circuit, the programmer can effect only a single predetermined program. For this reason the program modification circuit has been designed to enable the programmer to effect other programs. The program modification circuit receives inputs from selected function display lights to indicate that a certain function is being performed and from one or more sensors to indicate that a function has been completed or a condition has been satisfied in the automatic washer. The program modification circuit then causes several of the frequency dividers in the frequency divider chain of a clock forming part of the programmer to be bypassed. This results in the shortening of the next predetermined time period which the clock is programmed to establish. Therefore, the operation which is then being performed is shortened in duration so that the function appears to be curtailed thus causing a modification of the predetermined program. In addition, the rapid advance which is provided allows for manually speeding up the functions of the programmer by stepping the programmer through its sequence of operations at a much faster rate than normal. This also allows the programmer to be tested rapidly for ease in servicing.

    • An appliance programmer, in particular an automatic washer programmer, employs a memory circuit and a sequence control for establishing a predetermined program. Included in the programmer are a safety circuit and a water level sensing circuit whose function is to detect malfunction in the filling and draining operations of the appliance. Thus, when the machine has progressed to a washing operation during which the wash tub normally has a sufficient amount of water to perform the washing operation, the sensing circuit will sense a low water level condition and will reenergize the water fill valve solenoid to bring the water level up to the desired point. The programmer logic permits the safety circuit to reenergize the fill valve solenoid twice in response to low water level indications after which the logic will interrupt the program in response to a third low water level indication and will deenergize the appliance. In addition a service light is energized to call attention to the malfunction by the machine operator. Another portion of the safety circuit interrupts the program and deenergizes the machine function and energizes a service light when water is detected in the machine tub at the end of a draining operation.
