    • A continuous strip of coiled material is provided with protrusions, such as barbs, which are oriented to eliminate mutual interference when the coiled material is stacked in a compact, collapsed nested condition and wherein each turn of the coil is permanently fixed at equiangularly spaced multiple points alternately to its adjacent trailing and leading turns of the coil. An intrusion detection system signals intrusion into the space encompassed by the above mentioned coil and features a microwave energy source, receiver and detector for indicating a reduction in received microwave energy at the receiver indicative of intrusion into or other disruption of the energy guided path determined by the coil. Another embodiment of the barrier provides for similarly barbed strip material provided in a series of linear lengths with each length reversely folded at a succession of fold points to provide a sawtooth profile with the fold points permanently fixed alternately to corresponding fold points of adjacent trailing and leading strip lengths.

    • An entanglement barrier coil dispenser is disclosed wherein a frame supports a coil dispensing drum. The drum is designed to house a coil preliminary to its deployment, for example, as an anti-personnel barrier. The coil is extensible and retractable about its central axis between stretched and collapsed conditions and when housed within the drum is in collapsed condition coaxially aligned with a drum central axis. The frame in the specifically disclosed embodiment has a pair of skids for sliding surface movement upon vehicular towing, e.g., of the frame. The drum is supported for rotation on the frame whereby torsional stress within the coil during its deployment is automatically relieved to assure a desired obstacle emplacement without coil buckling.

    • A new and improved apparatus and process for continuously forming an intrusion detection barrier coil from a strip of barbed metal tape is provided. The apparatus includes a series of rollers for deforming the central portion of the barbed metal tape into a generally U-shaped configuration, as well as a dispenser for depositing an elastomeric filler material into the U-shaped tape, and a mechanism for feeding a continuous length of vibration-sensitive electrical cable in the elongated, U-shaped tape. Thereafter, the composite assembly of U-shaped barbed tape, elastomeric and electrical cable is continuously forced through a set of opposed rollers so as to roll form the U-shaped section into a generally circular, closed configuration. The composite structure is then bent by a series of offset rollers in a generally horizontal plane to form a helical coil of intrusion detection barbed tape. The subject process is performed in a continuous manner as the strip of barbed tape is advanced through a roll forming station to define the U-shaped central portion of the tape, through the stations wherein the elastomeric filler material and vibration-sensitive cable are fed into the U-shaped central portion of the barbed tape, through the roll forming station wherein the cable and filler material are encased within the barbed tape, and through the edge bending station wherein the composite barbed tape is formed into a helical coil.

    • A clip is disclosed for connecting two adjacent loops of segment bent helical barbed tape in close proximity to one another at a nesting point of two contiguous folds to form a concertina antipersonnel barrier. The clip includes first and second opposed flaps. The first flap includes an elongated semi-circular aperture extended therethrough and dimensioned to surround the contiguous folds in their entirety such that the clip reinforces the areas of stress concentration that lie proximate the contiguous folds. The second flap includes an identical elongated semi-circular aperture extended therethrough which functions to promote stacking of adjacent coils of helical barbed tape during storage. The clip further includes a unitarily formed locking mechanism defined by an extruded cylindrical sleeve disposed on the first opposed flap and a circular aperture extended through the second opposed flap. In operation the extruded cylindrical sleeve is extended through the circular aperture and compressed so as to expand outwardly and form an eyelet connection, thereby securing two adjacent loops of helical barbed tape.

    • A helical barbed tape is provided with reinforced barbs. The tape includes a plurality of barb clusters at spaced locations along a central supporting portion. Each barb cluster includes a pair of oppositely directed barbs with the respective pairs being disposed on opposite sides of the central supporting portion. The reinforcement is defined by a portion of the respective barbs which extends out of the initial plane of the barbs. In one embodiment, the reinforcement defines an elongated reinforcing flange.
