摘要： A method of treating sepsis and septic shock is using a passive simulated exercise device is disclosed. The exercise device functions to increase pulsatile shear stress (friction) to the vascular endothelium. Increased shear stress stimulates release of beneficial mediators from the endothelium into the circulation that promote integrity of the endothelial barrier as well as to prevent its disruption by suppressing inflammation and oxidative stress. The latter is the basis for the deleterious effects of sepsis and septic shock. Failure to control integrity of the endothelial barrier promotes excessive leakage of fluid and proteins from the vasculature into surrounding interstitial fluid that can rapidly escalate into major morbidity, shock and death.

In one aspect, an apparatus according the present invention comprises a mattress, a mattress support, cast shoes, a footboard support, a drive for causing the reciprocating movement, and a box frame to contain and support the reciprocating movement platform. In another aspect, an apparatus according to the present invention comprises a sling device connected to a drive causing the reciprocating movement, and a box frame to contain and support the reciprocating movement platform. In yet another aspect, medical treatments by externally applying periodic acceleration according to the present invention include the treatment of inflammatory diseases, the preconditioning or conditioning of vital organs to protect them from the deleterious effects of ischemia, non-invasive ventilation and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, treatment and preconditioning of the organs of animals such as horses, and the treatment of diseases or conditions where oxidative stress plays a role.

摘要： A method for calibrating non-invasive breathing monitors with sensors placed on the rib-cage and abdomen of a subject includes determining an initial scaling factor and an optimal multiplicative factor for the readings of the rib-cage and abdomen sensors using one of a least squares, linear regression, or multi-linear regression techniques. A current scaling factor is determined on a periodic basis using qualitative device calibration techniques. The current scaling factor is used to monitor breathing and diagnose obstructive apneas. Furthermore, the optimal multiplicative and the current scaling factor are used to determine the current tidal volume.

摘要： A method of permitting restful sleep at high altitudes is disclosed involving administration to a patient susceptible to Cheyne-Stokes respiration of a pharmaceutically acceptable amount of an endorphin-blocking compound capable of blocking the action of endogenous endorphins, whereby sleep interruptions characteristic of Cheyne-Stokes respiration are alleviated. There is also disclosed a method of permitting a continuous flow of oxygen to the brain cells in a sleeping patient otherwise susceptible to repeated interruptions of breathing that would retard the necessary steady flow of oxygen to brain cells to maintain their viable condition, which comprises administration prior to retiring of a pharmaceutically acceptable amount of an endorphin-blocking compound capable of blocking the action of endogenous endorphins to substantially obviate sleep interruptions that otherwise would occur. In a different embodiment there is provided a method of retarding the advance of the symptoms of senility in a patient having a gross loss of effective sleep and an erosion of viable brain cells due to the periodic disruption of sleep including periods of total lack of breathing depriving the brain of a necessary minimum oxygen level to sustain healthy brain tissue, said periodic disruption taking place during periods of sleep due to periodic cessation of breathing, said method comprising administering to said patient a chemical agent that blocks periodic cessation of breathing to maintain the necessary minimum oxygen level to sustain healthy brain tissue during periods of sleep.Also provided is a method of retarding the symptoms of aging caused by a decreased level of oxygen in the bloodstream in a geriatric patient which promotes excessive endorphin levels, by administering to a geriatric patient with diminished oxygen circulation in the bloodstream an endorphin blocker, whereby the normal level of endorphin is restored, thereby obviating the effects of the excess endorphin.

摘要： The present invention relates to the field of ambulatory and non-invasive monitoring of a plurality of physiological parameters of a monitored individual. The invention includes a physiological monitoring apparatus with an improved monitoring apparel, the apparel having sensors for monitoring parameters reflecting pulmonary function and/or parameters reflecting cardiac function and/or parameters reflecting the function of other organ systems. The apparel is preferably also suitable for medical, athletic, and for other uses. The sensors include one or more inductive plethysmographic sensors positioned to monitor at least basic pulmonary parameters, and optionally also basic cardiac parameters. The sensors include one or more ECG sensor electrodes that preferably include a flexible, conductive fabric. The monitoring apparatus also includes an electronic unit for receiving data from the sensors and for storing the data in a computer-readable medium and/or wirelessly transmitted the data. The invention also includes systems for receiving, storing, and processing data generated by one or more physiological monitored apparatuses.

摘要： The present invention relates to the field of ambulatory and non-invasive monitoring of a plurality of physiological parameters of a monitored individual. The invention includes a physiological monitoring apparatus with an improved monitoring apparel worn by a monitored individual, the apparel having attached sensors for monitoring parameters reflecting pulmonary function, or parameters reflecting cardiac function, or parameters reflecting the function of other organ systems, and the apparel being designed and tailored to be comfortable during the individual's normal daily activities. The apparel is preferably also suitable for athletic activities. The sensors preferably include one or more ECG leads and one of more inductive plethysmographic sensor with conductive loops positioned closely to the individual to preferably monitor at least basic cardiac parameters, basic pulmonary parameters, or both. The monitoring apparatus also includes a unit for receiving data from the sensors, and for storing the data in a computer-readable medium. The invention also includes systems comprising a central data repository for receiving, storing, and processing data generated by a plurality of physiological monitored apparatus, and for making stored data available to the individual and to health care providers.

摘要： A reciprocating platform assembly for oscillating a subject supporting platform in a back and forth, headward to footward motion includes a platform mounted on displacement modules that are mounted to a frame. The displacement modules are signally connected to a processor that controls movement of the platform through operation of the displacement modules. The platform may be oscillated to soothe a subject on the platform to hasten a sleeping state of the subject or to minimize or prevent the occurrence of apneas in the subject. The platform may also be oscillated to assist or support ventilation and/or for cardiopulmonary/cardiac support of the subject. The platform is additionally useful in conjunction with a physiological monitor to rapidly shake the subject when an adverse event occurs to wake the subject and terminate the adverse event. The monitor may also be employed as a trigger for assisting or supporting ventilation and cardiac/cardiopulmonary support.

摘要： The present invention is an apparatus and method for improving the detection of the inductance "signal" generated by an inductive plethysmograph (12). Signal detection is improved by modifying the design of the inductive plethysmograph (12) and also by improving the design of the associated circuitry. By virtue of these improvements, the associated circuitry may be located remotely rather than on the transducer, as is the current practice. In one aspect of the invention, the impedance matching transformer (14) joining the inductive plethysmograph (12) to the oscillator (16) is selected such that the inductance of its primary winding is greater than about ten times the reflected inductance of the inductive plethysmograph (12) and the cable (24) joining it to the transformer (14). In accordance with another aspect of the invention, the inductive plethysmograph (12) is modified such that the conductor (20) incorporated therein encircles the relevant body portion a plurality of times. In yet a further aspect of the invention, the cable (24) connecting the inductive plethysmograph (12) to the transformer (14) is selected such that the ratio of the diameter of its screen to the diameter of its center conductor is minimized for reducing the inductance per unit length thereof.
