    • A single layer roofing material having a headlap portion and a tab portion wherein the headlap portion has a color-value gradient or gradation and the tab portion has tabs and openings. The tabs may have a relatively uniform color. Openings between tabs expose the color gradient of the headlap portion when a first sheet of the roofing material is installed over a second sheet on a structure. A plurality of horizontal striations may be used to establish the desired color-value gradient. An illusion of depth or thickness is created when the roofing material is applied to a structure, such as a roof deck. The amount of tone and contrast may be selected to create the desired illusion of depth or thickness. The amount of contrast may be varied depending upon the color selected for each roofing material. The number of horizontal striations and their width may also be varied to provide the desired color-value gradient. Tab color, shape and size may also be varied to enhance the illusion of depth.

In one embodiment, a modular roofing structure comprises a photovoltaic shingle panel having a planar lower surface and an upper surface, and a rigid back member having a length the same as or greater than the length of the shingle panel and attached to the planar lower surface of the shingle panel. The roofing structure also includes at least one electrical contact pad on a lower surface of the back member, and at least one electrical conductor electrically coupled to the shingle panel via the lower surface and passing through the back member and out the lower surface. In such embodiments, the electrical conductor is electrically coupled to the at least one contact pad and extends past a front end of the back member sufficient to electrically contact a contact pad on another back member of a separate modular roofing structure couplable to the first.

    • The present invention relates to a mechanism for preventing damage to the actuator of a hydraulic choke valve in the event of excessive backpressure on the outlet of the choke. The backpressure relief device is applicable to a choke valve which meters flow from a high pressure annular region around the axially reciprocable choke throttling member into a low pressure exit channel coaxial with the throttling member. In particular, a shearable means is used to connect the reciprocable control shank of the actuator to the throttling valve member of the choke valve. In the event of excessive pressure on the exit channel of the choke valve, the shearable means will shear, thereby fully opening the valve and permitting the excessive pressure to escape. The shearable means is readily replaced so that the valve easily can be put back into operating condition.

    • In the method for mixing-free transport of homogeneous liquids in microchannels a heterogeneous liquid flow (14) is autonomously divided into portions, transported over a distance and then autonomously recombined. When the flow is divided into portions, individual volumes of a second liquid (16), which may be but must not be homogeneous, are introduced between volume fractions lying one behind the other of the heterogeneous liquid flow (14). While the volume fractions of the heterogeneous liquid (14) that lye close to one another would mix with each other without this measure being taken, separation of the individual volume fractions allows these volume fractions, and thus the heterogeneous liquid (14), to be transported over large distances without any mixing occurring. Treatment of the volume fractions of the heterogeneous liquid (14) requires separation of the liquid flow (12) of alternating volume fractions of the two liquids (14,16) such that again two flows are produced, one of which being the heterogeneous starting liquid and the other being the second liquid. Since both processes can take place autonomously by self-organization of the phases, an overall solution for the mixing-free transport of a heterogeneous liquid without employment of expensive fractionating apparatus can be achieved.

    • The present invention contemplates a choke control system that provides for local and off-site monitoring and control of the annulus flow pressure of a well. The choke control system includes a choke manifold connected to at least one choke and its associated actuator; a variety of instrumental drilling sensors, pump stroke counter switches, and choke position indicators; a local choke and hydraulic pressure control console; and a programmable controller in communication with the local choke and hydraulic pressure control console. The programmable controller handles the logical operations of the choke control system, including processing instrument measurements and operator input data to produce control signals for operating the choke, the choke actuator and the various valves associated with the choke manifold. The programmable controller is typically either an electronic digital computer and/or a programmable logic controller (PLC). The present invention further contemplates the two-way communication between the choke control system and the Internet via a satellite linkage.
