    • A method, a network access node and a computer program product are disclosed. The method of estimating a distance between at least one network access node and a network node of a wireless communications network, comprises: measuring total path losses between the at least one network access node and the network node on at least two different frequencies; determining frequency-dependent path losses of transmissions by the at least one network access node on the at least two different frequencies; and estimating a distance between the network node and the at least one network access node using the total path losses and the frequency-dependent path losses on the at least two different frequencies. By measuring the total path losses between network nodes on different frequencies and using frequency-dependent path losses determined for those frequencies, it is possible to estimate the distance between network nodes. This effectively removes the effects of the frequency-dependent path losses for the different frequencies in order to estimate the distance between network nodes.

    • A base station, a method and a computer program product are disclosed. The base station is operable, in concert with other base stations within a group, to support wireless communications with user equipment. The base station comprises: transmission logic operable to generate a cell having a coverage area supporting wireless communications with user equipment; reception logic operable to receive load information indicative of a user equipment communications load experienced by base stations within said group; and coverage area adjustment logic operable to determine changes required to said coverage area to change a user equipment communications load experienced by at least one base station within said group. In this way, it can be seen that each base station within the group may receive information about the user loading on other base stations within that group and is able to adjust its coverage area to cause that communications loading to be rebalanced to enable efficient use of resources and optimize the overall performance of each of the base stations within the group. The group of base stations with co-ordinated and optimized coverage can achieve higher end user data rates and improved quality of service than would otherwise be possible.

    • A telecommunications network node and methods are disclosed. The method is for generating, by genetic programming, evolved algorithms for adjusting base station transmission power to control coverage of a cell to assist in providing desired base station operating characteristics. The method comprises the steps of: generating, using predetermined functions and terminals defined in a functions and terminals list, a plurality of evolved algorithms each of which determine whether, for any particular base station operating conditions, to adjust said base station transmission power; determining a fitness level indicative of each evolved algorithm's ability to adjust base station transmission power to control coverage to achieve said desired base station operating characteristics under expected operating conditions; and iteratively performing said steps of generating and determining to generate further evolved algorithms using at least one of said evolved algorithms determined to have achieved a particular fitness level. In this way, it can be seen that algorithms can be assembled and then tested to see how suitable they are at controlling base station power to achieve particular operating characteristics under particular operating conditions. Those algorithms which are determined to be the best at achieving those characteristics under those particular operating conditions may then be used to generate further algorithms which, in turn, are also then assessed. Hence, those individual algorithms which are suited to the operating characteristics and the operating conditions can rapidly be generated thereby avoiding the need to manually design new algorithms which are specialised to particular environments.

    • A method of providing location information to a network application, a location server, a method of providing a trigger notification, a femto base station and a computer program product are disclosed. The method comprises the steps of: receiving details of a triggering event which is to be notified to the network application, the triggering event being a registration of user equipment with a predetermined femto cell of the wireless telecommunications network; providing triggering information indicative of the triggering event to that femto base station providing wireless communications coverage to the predetermined femto cell to cause that femto base station to provide a trigger notification indicating when the triggering event occurs; and in response to receipt of the trigger notification from the femto base station, providing location information to the network application, the location information providing the network application with an indication of the user equipment Femtocell and the predetermined femto cell, together with an indication of when the triggering event occurred. This enables the movement of user equipment into specific locations to be detected and provided to network application efficiently, without any subsequent location determination processing having to occur, which provides a low-power, scalable, accurate and non- invasive approach requiring no modification of user equipment.

    • A method is provided of identifying which one of a plurality of femtocell base stations neighbouring a first femtocell base station is to be the target for handover of a call connection with a user terminal from the first base station. The neighbour femtocell base stations use the same primary scrambling code as each other. The femtocell base stations use code-division multiple access, CDMA. Each of the neighbour femtocell base stations transmits a respective broadcast signal that include timing information such that each neighbour femtocell base station transmits a broadcast signal having different timing information to that of the other neighbour femtocell base stations. The user terminal receives broadcast signals, determines the timing information of at least one of the received broadcast signals and reports the timing information to the first femtocell base station. The first femtocell base station identifies the target femtocell base station for handover from the timing information.
