    • The disclosed vacuum valve device comprises a housing having a wall with a flat valve surface, a plate-like valve carriage having a cavity therein facing the valve surface, the wall having vacuum distribution ports therein, and a soft resilient rubber-like, plate-like valve member snugly received in the cavity and having vacuum distribution passages thereon. The valve member is slidable along the valve surface for selectively interconnecting the ports. The valve carriage has tractor elements in the form of pins thereon projecting into the cavity. The valve member has blind openings therein for receiving the pins to transmit driving forces between the carriage and the valve member. A keying pin is also formed on the carriage and is received in a uniquely located blind opening in the valve member. The pins have flat surfaces to provide passages for the escape of air that would otherwise be trapped in the openings by the pins.

    • A control shaft is rotatable in the axial opening in a cylindrical boss projecting forwardly from a front wall of a resinous plastic housing. The boss is received in a cylindrical opening in a panel formed with two slots for receiving mounting members projecting forwardly from the housing and having latching hooks for securing the housing on the panel. The boss and the mounting members form a triangle. The spacing between the boss and the plane of the mounting members is different from the spacing between the cylindrical opening and the plane of the slots whereby an interference fit is produced between the mounting members and the slots to obviate looseness. An anti-rotation pin on the housing is received in another opening in the panel. A key pin on the housing is received in a key opening in the panel. The key pin and the boss are located along a radial line oriented at an acute angle to the plane of the mounting members. Each of the latching hooks has a hook shoulder ramp slanting forwardly and laterally and a lateral ramp tapering forwardly from the hook shoulder ramp. At the intersection between the hook shoulder ramp and the lateral ramp, a rounded member projects rearwardly for engaging the panel and securely retaining the latching hook in the slot. The forward and lateral slanting of the hook shoulder ramps compensates for variations in the thickness of the panel and obviates looseness throughout a range of thickness.

    • Several individually operable push buttons are provided to initiate an OFF function, defrost, air conditioning and various air directions and other functions of an automotive heating, ventilating and air conditioning system. Each push button has a carriage adapted to be fitted on one side with an optional leaf spring contactor engageable with fixed contact members. The opposite side of the carriage is fixedly fitted with a compressible silicone rubber or other resilient valve member in sealing engagement with a port plate to carry out vacuum valving functions. Each carriage is guided by a tongue-and-slot guiding arrangement, whereby sealing pressure is applied between the valve member and the port plate. Each carriage has a rearwardly projecting tongue, slidably received in a slot formed in flange structure on the port plate. The front portion of each push button is also slidably guided to maintain the sealing pressure. Each push button has its own coiled return spring, received and detained in a semicylindrical nest, offset laterally on the carriage and overlapping the valve member and the contactor, thus affording a highly compact construction. A delatching mechanism is provided, whereby depression of a single push button, or any of a plurality of push buttons, delatches all of the other push buttons, including one push button having a push-push latching action. The delatching mechanism is operative to displace and disable a latching hook which produces the push-push latching action, while also displacing latching bars for the other push buttons.

    • A series of manually depressible pushbuttons establish all of the operating functions for an automotive air control system. Latching and block-out mechanisms are provided to latch only one pushbutton at a time in the depressed position. The pushbuttons operate the first arms of spring-biased levers having second arms for selectively moving particular selector plates of a stacked set. The selector plates are adapted to operate single function control devices, including both vacuum valves and electrical switches having movable control members with knobs thereon projecting through large size and small size openings in the selector plates. The second arms of the levers extend through large size and small size slots in the selector plates. The small size slots and openings afford operating connections, while the large size slots and openings merely provide for idling movement. Each of the selector plates has a unique combination of larger and smaller slots and larger and smaller openings, whereby the depression of each pushbutton uniquely operates one or more control devices, in accordance with the functional mode assigned to such pushbutton. One of the control devices takes the form of a unique snap-action electrical switch in which the movable contactor has a combination of sliding and rocking movement. The control unit also has a non-latching pushbutton switch for causing momentary closure of a control circuit for a rear window defroster, such switch being pre-assembled as a cartridge for easy insertion into the housing of the control unit.

    • First and second self-supporting sheet metal contact plates are mounted in an insulating housing, in planes perpendicular to the axis of a driver which is rotatable to a series of detented positions. The driver carries first and second contactors having first and second contact points slidably engaging opposite sides of the plates while also having riders engaging opposite sides of the first contact plate at all times. The driver carries first and second coil springs biasing the contactors against the plates. The first and second plates have first and second sectors with first and second radial edges on opposite sides of a narrow gap across which the points are movable at different radially spaced locations. The points break contact substantially simultaneously with the second edge whereby wear due to electrical arcing is distributed between the radially spaced locations. A third contactor is biased by the second coil spring into sliding engagement with third and fourth contact plates for making and breaking another electrical circuit therebetween. A pinion gear on the driver meshes with and drives a gear rack on a linearly movable vacuum valve for performing vacuum switching functions. The contact plates are clamped between case and cover components of the housing. To facilitate assembly, the first and second plates are initially connected by a narrow temporary web and have rectangularly bent flanges with interlocking hooks remote from the web for strictly limiting relative movement of the plates. The third and fourth plates have a similar web and hooks.

    • The disclosed control device includes an electrical switch having a switch body in which an electrically insulating switch carriage is manually movable along a predetermined path. Fixed electrical contacts are mounted on the body along such path and are selectively engageable by an electrically conductive contactor mounted on the carriage. The contactor takes the form of an angle-shaped plate consisting of first and second flanges in a rectangular relationship. The first flange has portions, preferably contact points, slidably engageable with the fixed contacts. The carriage has a guide slot for slidably receiving the second flange. A compression spring on the carriage produces contact pressure between the first flange and the fixed contacts. The second flange and the guide slot constitute the sole guide and support for the contactor, which is substantially flat except for the contact points. The flanges extend in a direction parallel to the path and have the same length in such direction. The second flange has a detent point projecting laterally into a guiding channel formed in a side wall of the guide slot. The detent point is detained in the guiding channel by a detent bar obstructing the entrance to the channel.

    • The disclosed pushbutton operated automotive air control unit incorporates a unique snap-action electrical switch in which the movable contactor has a combination of sliding and rocking movement. The contactor is rockably supported on a fulcrum member which is movably mounted on the slidable carriage. The fulcrum member includes a locating projection, loosely received in a slot formed in the contactor. A coil spring is interposed between the carriage and the fulcrum member for biasing the contactor toward a first fixed contact. There is also a second fixed contact having contactor rocking lugs for slidably engaging the contactor, as the carriage is moved between first and second positions. In the first position, the lugs engage a portion of the contactor which is on the remote side of the fulcrum member from the first fixed contact, whereby the contactor is rocked into electrical engagement with the first fixed contact. The movement of the carriage to its second position causes movement of the contactor relative to the lugs until the fulcrum member passes the lugs whereby the contactor is abruptly rocked out of engagement with the first fixed contact, thus affording a snap action.

    • A shaft is rotatable in a housing to several detented positions, established by a detent wheel and spring pressed detent balls, and is provided with a pinion gear which drives a gear rack on a valve carriage guided for linear movement along a spacer. A rubber valve on the carriage is movable across vacuum valve ports to perform vacuum switching functions. A bearing on the carriage moves along a slot in the spacer and carries an idler gear which rolls along a gear rack on the housing and drives a gear rack on an electrical carriage, slidable along the spacer. Fan and clutch contactors are movable with the electrical carriage across fixed contacts to perform electrical switching functions. The detent balls and springs can be inserted through access slots from outside the housing. The housing has two mounting members with latching hooks projecting forwardly for insertion into slots in a supporting panel. A boss on the housing around the shaft is insertable into an opening in the panel. The location of the boss forms a triangle with the locations of the hooks, whereby rotation of the housing on the panel is prevented. The hooks are located and configured to afford a tight interference fit with the panel. A uniquely located keying pin mates with a keying opening in the panel. Another uniquely located keying pin on the valve carriage mates with a keying opening in the valve to preclude assembly of an incorrect valve. An assembly fixture is adapted to be used for assembling the switch and is provided with an alignment pin adapted to extend through openings in the front housing wall, the clutch contactor and the electrical carriage as well as into a blind opening in the bearing, to insure correct assembly. A uniquely located keying tab on the valve carriage is movable through a keying slot in a flange on the housing, during the assembly, to preclude the assembly of an incorrect carriage.

    • Seven or some other number of individually operable push buttons are provided to carry out control functions of an automotive heating, ventilating and air conditioning system. The push buttoms are movable between extended and depressed positions and are biased toward their extended positions by individual return springs. A latching mechanism is provided for latching any selected push button in its depressed position while unlatching the other push buttons. An array of slidable lockout blocks prevents simultaneous depression of more than one push button, by providing only enough clearance space in the array to accept one lockout penetrating member on one push button at a time. The array is lightly spring biased to prevent rattling of the lockout blocks. Two biasing springs are compressed between the endmost pairs of lockout blocks at the opposite ends of the array.
