    • A suspension system incorporating upper and lower torque rods pivotally connected between a hanger and an axle seat. The upper torque rod is preferably a hydraulic cylinder and piston assembly, the length of which is adjustable between extended and retracted conditions. In the extended condition, the upper torque rod pivots the axle to a forward pitch at which it is self-steering when the vehicle is driven forward. In the retracted condition, the upper torque rod pivots the axle to a negative pitch condition in which it is self-steering when the vehicle is operated in reverse. The hydraulic cylinder and piston assembly can be operated by the driver such as when the gears are shifted between forward and reverse. A lift spring is mounted between a plate on the hanger and a plate on the lower torque rod. The lift spring is positioned within a pocket defined on the hanger. The hanger is integral with a longitudinal plate and an upper spring mounting plate, and a shock absorber bracket is integral with the longitudinal plate.

    • A suspension system having a torque beam pivotally connected to a bushing supported by a hanger and an axle seat having a linear bushing mount to the torque beam to provide a universal pivot at the axle seat. In one embodiment there is another bushing between the torque rod and the axle seat so that the entire universal pivot is at the axle seat. In another embodiment, the universal pivot is provided partly by the torque rod connection to the hanger and partly by the connection between the axle seat and the torque rod. In two other embodiments, identical components allow installation of a suspension system to a tag axle or a steer axle except that a special tower is provided for the steer axle installation to give clearance between the vehicle frame and the wheel. Two additional embodiments have an overslung axle seat and in one, the torque beam and axle seat are outboard of the chassis.

    • A first embodiment of a suspension supports a vehicle from a drive axle and includes a forward hanger and a rearward hanger depending downwardly from the chassis, an axle seat assembly attaching the suspension to the axle, a first torque arm pivotally connected between the axle seat asssembly and the forward hanger, a second torque arm pivotally connected between the axle seat assembly and the rear hanger, a central elastomer spring mounted between opposing surfaces of the torque arms, and an upper radius rod pivotally connected and extending between the forward hanger and axle seat assembly to form a parallelogram with the first torque arm to control and stabilize the axle. A second embodiment of the same suspension mounts a vehicle chassis to a steer axle with the radius rod being offset inwardly and the axle seat being mounted to the top of the steer axle to accommodate space limitations. In a variation of the second embodiment, a U-joint comprising a pair of transversely oriented bushings mount either end of each torque arm to minimize torsional forces in each torque arm as one end of the axle oscillates differently than the other with respect to the chassis, and a beam guide limits lateral shifting of the suspension.

    • A first embodiment of a leaf spring suspension assembly for a tractor trailer or the like having single or multiple axles includes a first and second hanger with a camelback spring slidingly secured to an axle bracket assembly with a single torque rod extending between the forward hanger and the axle bracket assembly to stabilize same and prevent axle wind up or wheel hopping. In a multiple axle vehicle, a pivoting type equalizer is mounted between leaf springs and provides the bearing support for an end of each spring. In a second embodiment, an equalizer is supported from the chassis member by an elastomeric spring member with a shock absorber dampening the oscillation thereof. The equalizer is stabilized in the fore and aft direction by a mounting bracket and web assembly within which the mounting bracket extends, and a telescoping tube assembly vertically aligned and surrounding the shock absorber to permit vertical movement but restrict fore and aft movement of same. A third embodiment has a free floating shackle assembly which rotatably mounts an end of each leaf spring to permit pivoting movement of the leaf spring with respect to the shackle assembly. The same torque rod and axle bracket assembly stabilizes the axle and permits relative sliding movement between each leaf spring and its respective axle to enhance the pivoting movement in the shackle assembly.

    • A vehicle air suspension assembly consists generally of a hanger and a front and rear air spring depending from the chassis on opposite sides of the hanger. An axle seat assembly attaches to the axle and rigidly extends between the springs. An upper and a lower radius rod are pivotally connected between the hanger and the axle seat assembly and form a parallelogram which supports and stabilizes the axle. The pivotal connections of the radius rods are adjustable to provide accurate axle alignment and pitch in relation to the chassis. A shock absorber extends between the axle seat assembly and the chassis to dampen suspension movement.
