    • A self-venting drain valve (10) is mounted on a wall (30) of a fluid container having a fluid hole (32) and a vent hole (34). The valve has a body (20) with a bore (38) therein. A first hole (44) and a second hole (46) extend into said bore coaxial with the fluid and vent holes respectively. A drain port (48) extends through the valve body opposite the first hole. An air vent opening (54) extends through the valve body, generally opposite, but slightly offset from the second hole. A rotatable spool (60) is mounted in the bore. The spool has a first ball portion (62) adjacent the fluid hole and a second ball portion (64) adjacent the vent hole. The first and second ball portions of the spool have fluid passages therethrough. In a first position, the fluid passages in the ball portions are disposed from the fluid and vent openings and the valve is closed. Movement of the spool to a second position, enables the fluid passage in the first ball portion of the spool to receive fluid, placing the container under slight negative pressure. Further movement of the spool to a third position, opens the fluid passage through the second ball portion of the spool and enables air to enter the container so it may readily drain.

    • A self venting drain valve (10) for a fuel filter/water separator unit or other air tight fluid container is disclosed. The valve includes a arcuately elongated fluid hole (18) and a vent hole (20) in a lower wall (12) of the unit. A cylindrical movable member (36) is mounted for rotational movement on a pivot post (16) which extends downward from the unit. The movable member includes an upper planar face (40). A arcuately elongated slot (42) in the movable member is in fluid connection with a liquid outlet (46). The movable member also includes an air passage (48) in communication with an air intake (52). In a first rotational position the movable member blocks liquid flow out of the unit as well as air flow into the unit. In a second rotational position, the fluid hole on the unit is in communication with the liquid outlet opening of the movable member while the air flow into the unit remains blocked. In a third rotational position, the fluid hole in the wall is fully aligned with the elongated slot on the movable member while the air passage on the movable member is aligned with the vent hole in the unit. This enables air to enter the unit and the liquid to readily escape through the liquid outlet of the movable member.

    • A filter cartridge includes a filter housing having a main housing portion and a removable end closure defining a filter element cavity. The main housing portion includes an open annular end having an in-turned annular lip with a series of receiving slots formed in the inner surface of the lip. A filter element is disposed within the housing cavity and includes an end cap with a series of axially-extending drive pins, and an axially-extending stand-off device, where the drive pins are axially longer than the stand-off device. A mounting hub having a central threaded collar for attachment to a base is disposed between the outer surface of the end cap and the lip of the main housing portion. The mounting hub includes a series of orientation through-holes which correspond to the location of the drive pins on the end cap. The orientation pins project through the through-holes in the mounting hub and are received in the receiving slots in the main housing portion to fix the mounting hub against rotation within the filter housing. The housing can then be spun-on to the base. The axially-extending stand-off device separates the mounting hub from the end cap to provide a flow path therebetween, and allow fluid to flow through outer through-holes in the mounting hub to the peripheral region of the filter element. The fluid can then flow radially-inward through the element, and through a central through-bore in the collar of the mounting hub to the base.

    • A filter element is removably supported within a housing comprising a filter head and a collection bowl. The element is removed from the lower end of the housing when the collection bowl is removed. The element includes an annular side wall which supports the element on radial ribs within the collection bowl; and a series of projections or posts which engage ribs on the bowl and cause the element to rotate in conjunction with the bowl when the collection bowl is screwed off of the head. The rotation of the element breaks the seal stiction between an upper seal on the element and the filter head, such that the element remains with the bowl. Openings around the sidewall facilitate fluid flow around the lower end cap. The element is supported by the collection bowl as the bowl is removed, and easily removed from the bowl and replaced.
