    • A device and method for substantially enhancing the cooling of electric machines, e.g., motors and generators, is described. A hermetically-sealed chamber surrounds electric wire winding end-turns at either end of the stator core, and contains at least one phase-change coolant. The coolant removes heat from the stator winding through the end-turns, where often temperatures are the greatest, through cyclical ebullition, whereby heat generated by the stator winding end-turns boils and, subsequently, vaporizes the liquid coolant. The hot, vaporized coolant is removed through at least one vapor return passage and collects, cools, and condenses on the stator cooling jacket, which removes heat from the vaporized coolant. The liquid condensate precipitates into a wicking matrix, which continuously returns the liquid condensate through capillarity to the liquid coolant pool that partially wets the wicking matrix and winding end-turns. Addition of a passive, phase-change cooling system at the stator winding end-turns substantially enhances cooling the machine, which can reduce the size, weight, and cost of machines, especially, e.g., linear-, switch reluctant-, variable reluctant-, induction-, rotary-, and permanent magnet-type machines, and can provide greater efficiency of operation, lower cost per power unit, and increased power density.

    • A high-density, staggered pin fin array, and a method for manufacturing the pin fin array, are disclosed. The pin fin array includes a plurality of fin members, each having a plurality of elongated, pin-shaped fins arranged in a row; and, at least one connector for connecting the fins together, each at one end thereof. The plurality of fin members is arranged in a stack, wherein respective fins of each fin member are in registration with slots formed in its adjacent fin members in the stack. The method for manufacturing the pin fin array includes forming a plurality of fin members from a raw planar, tape, or thin layer stock, positioning the fin members relative to each other so that the respective fins of each fin member are in registration with the slots formed in adjacent fin members, and joining each fin member with the adjacent fin members. The high-density, staggered pin fin array produces very high heat transfer coefficients by geometrically inducing turbulent mixing, thereby increasing the thermal performance of the pin fin array.

    • Disclosed is a chromatographic system and method which includes a passive pre-heater assembly. In the inventive system and method a fluid mixture is supplied from an injector to the pre-heater assembly and then to a chromatographic column having an active heating source. The pre-heater assembly includes a convoluted tube with first and second ends and a fluid passage extending centrally therebetween, first and second end fittings attached respectively to the first and second ends of the convoluted tube, and a thermally conductive film attached to an outer surface of the convoluted tube. The first end fitting is adapted for fluidly connecting the first end of the convoluted tube to the injector and the second end fitting is adapted for fluidly connecting the second end of the convoluted tube to the chromatographic column. The thermally conductive film conveys heat from an active heating source of a chromatographic column to the convoluted tube when the pre-heater assembly is positioned adjacent to the active heating source. The central fluid passage in the convoluted tube has a series of bends which function to create a secondary fluid flow field that is substantially orthogonal to a primary flow field established when fluid is traversing the fluid passage in the tube.

    • A power absorbing dynamometer includes a stator having an inside stator surface and a rotor having an inside rotor surface. The rotor is rotatable by a mechanical power source. The inside rotor and stator surfaces generally face and oppose each other. Together, the rotor and stator define a passage bounded substantially by the inside surfaces thereof. The passage preferably is a torus-shaped passage within the dynamometer. Liquid is introduced into the passage via a port of the dynamometer. The dynamometer also includes means for developing and maintaining within the passage a unique liquid flow which is a substantially helical recirculating flow of the liquid on the inside rotor and stator surfaces as the rotor is rotated by the mechanical power source. The liquid is thereby heated or vaporized as the rotor is rotated by the mechanical power source, and power absorbed from the mechanical power source is related to a rate at which the liquid is heated or vaporized. The power absorbing dynamometer preferably causes at least some of the liquid in the passage to boil and vaporize due substantially only to friction associated with the substantially helical recirculating flow of the liquid on the inside rotor and stator surfaces. The power absorbed from the mechanical power source is related to the rate at which the liquid vaporizes. The vaporized liquid preferably collects in the center of the passage where it can be easily vented.
