    • The application relates to SMS over LTE radio access. Several alternatives are already known, such as specified in 3GPP TS 24.247 which supports text messaging capabilities and 3GPP 23.204 which supports all existing SMS capabilities through SMS encapsulation in IP. Furthermore, 3GPP 23.272 which relates to SMS in CS fallback. A further technique is known as Generic Access Network which is under study in 3GPP 23.879 relating to CS domain services over evolved PS access and in Voice Over LTE VOLGA. The present application provides a solution for handling messages between legacy networks in the form of circuit-switched networks and IP network architecture in the form of an IP Multimedia Subsystem IMS while minimizing the efforts needed for system integration by maximal reuse of existing functionalities. This is achieved by an entity (100) which adapts messages received from the IMS (50) in such a way that the appear to a controller entity (200) providing conventional short message functionalities as if they have been received from a mobile terminal accessing a radio access network through a radio network interface of a circuit-switched network (40).

    • The invention relates to a technique for selecting a framing format to be used for communications on the user plane of a layered communications network. The selection technique includes the provision of a first user plane component (such as a media gateway, MGW) bridging transmission regimes and operable in accordance with two or more different framing formats. The first user plane component is controllable via control messages received from a control plane without being responsive to any framing format instructions possibly included in the control messages. The first user plane component or any other user plane equipment in communication with the first user plane component selects the framing format to be used for user plane communications. The selected framing format is then implemented by the first user plane component for communications with a second user plane component.

    • To enhance quality of service management in support of application sessions running on top of bearer services, according to the present invention it is suggested to, firstly, execute a bearer service analysis in support of automatic quality of service class management. Heretofore, a bearer service carrying packet switched service traffic in support of an application session is analyzed for identification of different types of services by the application session. Related analysis information derived at an analysis unit 10 is then forwarded to a quality of service management unit 16, which is adapted to automatic quality of service class management. In particular, the quality of service management unit 16 determines and manages a quality of service class according to the identified quality of service class as forwarded by the bearer service analysis unit 10.
