    • An apparatus, system and method for lighting an area, for example, an outdoors pedestrian area or building facade or an auto traffic area, or an indoor large area, which provides indicator/guide light, reference light for structures, and task lighting for a target area. The method uses first lighting sources that are directly viewable by observers and which can be historical, architectural, or aesthetically selected sources, but which produce a relatively low level of light or luminance insufficient to effectively light the area but sufficient to act as an indicator or guide, as well as to provide reference illumination on buildings or structures. Second lighting sources are configured to produce directional light to light the area but hide the light sources from most conventional observer viewing angles and may be enclosed within the general outlines of the globe or transmissive surface area of the fixture. Additionally, the fixture may appear to the average observer that the two sources are one historic or architectural source. Use of low-level directly viewable sources allows lower levels of light from the second sources to effectively light the area. This produces benefits regarding light pollution, such as reducing sky glow, glare, and spill light, as well as reducing energy usage.

    • An apparatus, method, or system of lighting units comprising a plurality of individually positionable lighting elements, such as one or more LEDs, each element optionally having an associated optic. In embodiments of the present invention, one or more optics are developed using optimization techniques that allow for lighting different target areas in an effective manner by rotating or otherwise positioning the reflectors, refractive lenses, TIR lenses, or other lens types to create a composite beam. The apparatus, method, or system of lighting herein makes it possible to widely vary the types of beams from an available fixture using a small number of inventoried optics and fixtures. In some cases, by using a combination of individual beam patterns, a small set of individual optics would be sufficient to create a majority of the typical and specialized composite beams needed to meet the needs of most lighting projects and target areas.

    • A lighting fixture with a controllable light block. The fixture includes a reflector and high intensity discharge lamp that requires a re-strike or warm-up period to come to full brightness or intensity. A cover member is mounted to the reflector and is moveable between an unblocked position and a blocked position. Movement of the cover member is immediate so that blockage of light from the fixture is immediately effectuated. The apparatus is configured so that cover member can be in the blocked position for indefinite periods of time even though the arc lamp continues to be operated at full power, without heat buildup which is detrimental to any part of the apparatus. The cover member also allows light control and special effects lighting options. Another aspect of the invention utilizes an aperture in the cover member that is alignable with the light source when the cover member is in the blocked position. Different inserts can be placed in the aperture, or it can be opened and closed independently to create special or theatrical effects including changes in color.
