    • A method for laundering a textile wash load is provided for use in a vertical axis washing machine in which a concentrated detergent solution is continuously applied to a spinning wash load for a predetermined time period to thoroughly wet the clothes load. The initial charge of detergent is thoroughly mixed with the detergent in a recirculation step before being applied to the clothes load. The concentration wash liquid is incrementally applied to the spinning clothes load until a sufficient amount of wash liquid is detected as having been introduced to the wash zone. That amount of wash liquid is then recirculated and reapplied to the clothes load for a predetermined length of time. After the time period, additional water is added to the solution to dilute it to a normal concentration and then mechanical agitation and rinsing steps are conducted to complete the wash cycle.

    • An automatic washer having an improved sump formed in a bottom wall of the wash tube. The sump acts a collection zone for wash liquid and is spaced a sufficient distance from the wash basket and has sufficient capacity such that it can collect sufficient amount of wash liquid therein to present a constant supply of wash liquid to the pump while preventing the collected wash liquid from coming in contact with the basket while in the collection zone. The sump has a rear wall which forms a chord of the tube and a front wall which is flush with the circumferential wall of the tube. The sump also has a sloping bottom wall which communicates at a lowest portion thereof with the suction inlet of the pump, which the sump overlies.

    • A method of washing fabric in a washer having a wash chamber rotatable about a vertical axis and charged with a detergent solution is provided. The wash chamber is rotated about its vertical axis a number of revolutions sufficient to cause the fabric and detergent solution within the wash chamber to rotate at a speed approximately the same as the wash chamber. The wash chamber is periodically decelerated to cause the fabric and detergent solution to move relative to the wash chamber due to rotational inertia of the fabric and detergent solution. The fabric is caused to tumble within the wash chamber by impinging the fabric on structures in the wash chamber as the fabric is moving relative to the wash chamber. The steps of rotating, decelerating, and tumbling are repeated for a predetermined first period of time. A recirculating spray of concentrated detergent solution is directed on to the fabric during the first period of time as the fabric is rotating with and tumbling in the wash chamber. Finally, the detergent solution is removed from the fabric by spinning and draining the wash chamber.
