    • An apparatus for inserting an intraocular lens through an incision into an eye includes a tube defining a hollow passage, an injector rod longitudinally moveable within the hollow passage and a force transfer assembly coupled to the injector rod. The injector rod has a distal portion adapted to contact the intraocular lens within the hollow passage of the tube to urge the intraocular lens distally through the hollow passage. The force transfer assembly is adapted to transfer sufficient force to the injector rod to effect the longitudinal movement of the injector rod and is further adapted to prevent the transfer of sufficient force to the injector rod to effect the longitudinal movement of the injector rod in response to an increased amount of force being applied to the force transfer assembly.

    • A system for measuring the size of a capsular bag of an eye of a subject includes a size indicator and a sizing gauge. The size indicator is configured for insertion into a capsular bag and includes a peripheral portion and a pair of arms. The peripheral portion is configured to engage the capsular bag. Each of the arms has a proximal end and a distal end, the arms being joined to one another at the proximal ends. The peripheral portion is joined to the distal ends of the arms. The arms form an angle that depends on a size of the capsular bag into which the size indicator is placed. The sizing gauge has a body having a front surface, along with first and second features disposed along or behind the front surface. The features are configured to correspond to an angle that is within a predetermined range of angles of the arms of the size indicator when the size indicator is placed within a capsular bag.

    • An intraocular lens implantable in an eye includes an optic for placement in the capsular bag of the eye and for directing light toward the retina of the eye. The optic has a central optical axis, an anterior face, an opposing posterior face and a peripheral edge between the faces. The peripheral edge has one or more curved or angled surfaces that reduce glare within the IOL. For instance, a rounded transition surface on the anterior side of the peripheral edge diffuses the intensity of reflected light, or a particular arrangement of straight edge surfaces refracts the light so as not to reflect, or does not reflect at all. The intersection of the peripheral edge and at least one of the anterior face and the posterior face, preferable both of such faces, forms a peripheral corner located at a discontinuity between the peripheral edge and the intersecting face or faces. The present IOLs inhibit cell growth from the eye in front of or in back of the optic and reduce glare obtained in the eye in which the IOL is located.

    • A foldable intraocular lens for providing vision contains an optic body that includes an optical zone and a peripheral zone entirely surrounding the optical zone. The optic body has an anterior face, a substantially opposing posterior face, an optic edge, and an optical axis. The anterior face comprises a central face, a peripheral face, and a recessed annular face therebetween that is disposed posterior to the peripheral face. The intraocular lens further comprises at least one haptic that is integrally formed with the peripheral zone. The haptic comprises a distal posterior face, a proximal posterior face, and a step edge disposed at a boundary therebetween. The haptic further comprises a side edge disposed between the optic edge and the step edge. The proximal posterior face and the posterior face of the optic body form a continuous surface. An edge corner is formed by the intersection of the continuous surface with the optic edge, the side edge, and the step edge.

    • The invention provides a disposable plastic mold assembly for an intraocular lens or the optic body thereof, which is inexpensive, less labor intensive than prior art intraocular lens molding techniques, and produces an intraocular lens having smooth, polished edges which require little or no post-mold finishing work. Numerous innovative features of the invention include an edge design which assures a seal between the male and female molds to thereby minimize flash during the cast molding operation, and the provision of a way to pre-align the male and female molds during assembly, consisting of an interference fitting relationship between the male and female molds. An additional feature is a way to maintain contact between the male and female molds during casting, which particularly involves the provision of a negative draft angle on the inner surface of the female mold's outer wall, or, alternatively, texturing which is applied to that inner surface so that it engages the outer edge at the top of the male mold during assembly. Yet another important feature of the invention is a structure for achieving axial and rotational orientation to produce lens edge geometries without unwanted steps on the lens edge. The alignment is achieved with interlocking steps on the male and female molds. The interlocking elements may be pins or annular elements.
