    • A 2×2 optical switching apparatus using photonic crystal structures has a compact, simple structure and includes an optical-guide module having first, second, third and fourth waveguides, the first and second waveguides guiding a first optical signal of a first input port to a first and a second output port, respectively, the third and fourth waveguides guiding a second optical signal of a second input port to the second and the first output ports, respectively, and formed with photonic crystals having a complete photonic bandgap for a wavelength range of the first and second optical signals, and a switching control section controlling the first and second optical signals to be respectively guided through either a first/third waveguide route or a second/fourth waveguide route according to a route-selecting-control signal inputted from outside. The 2×2 optical switching apparatus has no mechanical motion, little polarization dependence and may be efficiently used in optical networks.

    • An apparatus writes and reads data with respect to a holographic storage medium. The holographic data writing apparatus includes a laser beam irradiating device irradiating a laser beam onto a storage medium which is capable of writing a holographic data thereon; and a reflective data mask arranged adjacent to the storage medium and storing data for copy thereon, and when the laser beam is transmitted through the storage medium and is incident on the reflective data mask, the reflective data mask reflects the incident laser beam in the form of a signal beam corresponding to the data, and irradiates the signal beam onto the storage medium, such that interference patterns of the laser beam and the signal beam are written in the storage medium.

    • An optical isolator using a photonic crystal. The optical isolator includes an input portion that in turn includes an input waveguide part and an input waveguide having a taper portion formed in the input waveguide part. An output portion includes an output waveguide part and an output waveguide formed in the output waveguide part continuously with the input waveguide. The output waveguide includes a backward directional optical signal shield surface having an inclination greater than the taper portion with respect to an optical signal transmission center axis. The optical isolator is operable to have an optical signal substantially transmitted in a forward direction from the input portion to the output portion and further operable to substantially not transmit the optical signal in a backward direction from the output portion to the input portion.

    • A data writing and reading device is capable of writing and reading data with respect to a holographic storage medium. The data writing and reading device includes a light source which emits a laser beam, a focusing lens unit having a multi-focal lens which splits the laser beam into a reference beam and an object beam and projects the split beams to the storage medium so that an interference pattern between the reference and object beams can be written in the storage medium, and a photo detector for detecting the object beam when the object beam is reproduced in accordance with the holographic data with the incidence of the reference beam to the storage medium. With a simple hardware, data can be written to or read out from the holographic storage medium.
